The PositionAbout Us
During this six-month internship in the Roche Pharma Research and Early Development Data and Analytics Department, you will be based in Basel, Switzerland, joining a dynamic team of researchers with expertise in computer science, image processing, and bioinformatics. You will receive comprehensive support to ensure the project's success, with guidance provided to conduct independent research and encouragement to approach problems creatively.
The Opportunity:Your work will focus on the field of digital pathology, where Whole Slide Images (WSIs) —high-resolution digital scans of tissue sections— are essential for diagnostics. Understanding tissue at the cellular level offers a significant opportunity to advance this field. However, extracting and integrating such detailed information from large WSI datasets presents substantial computational and storage challenges. This internship project aims at developing efficient methods to capture and represent cell morphology and topology, enabling the extraction of interpretable, spatially informed WSI-level features. The project will specifically focus on oncology applications to improve diagnostic precision and scalability for cancer-related digital pathology analyses.
Who You are:
You are enrolled or have completed your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at a university within the past 12 months prior to the start date, preferably in the field of Computer Science, Bioinformatics, etc.
You possess strong coding skills in Python and are proficient with deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch or TensorFlow).
You are enthusiastic about medical image analysis and computer vision
You demonstrate excellent communication and collaboration skills, with proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
Experience in digital pathology is advantageous and experience in computational biology or bioinformatics is preferred but not essential
Your complete application includes the following documents:
A current CV and a Motivation Letter, where you indicate your preferred start date of the internship
Due to regulations, non-EU/EFTA citizens must provide a certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory as part of the application documents, and must be continuously enrolled in their university program for the whole duration of this internship.
Start date: 15 August 2025, or upon availability
Duration: 6 months, full-time (40 hours/ week)
Location: Basel
