Intern - R&D Multiphysics Simulation Intern - Spring or Summer 2027
Be an Early Applicant
Support fusion-energy R&D by developing coupled electromagnetic and thermal models for high-temperature superconducting magnet components. Analyze magnet design concepts, test simulation modules against independent models and experimental data, interpret experimental setups, write documented version-controlled code, and present findings in a final report. The internship is onsite or hybrid in Somerville, Massachusetts, lasts 13–26 weeks, and requires safety awareness around industrial hazards.
About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.
Combining decades of research, top talent, and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And we're working with policymakers, suppliers, and many others to build the energy industry of the future.
We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised $4 billion of capital, making us the largest and leading fusion company in the world.
Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.
If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.
Join the power movement as a R&D Multiphysics Simulation Intern
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking an R&D Multiphysics Simulation Intern to join the R&D team in Somerville, MA. The R&D Multiphysics Simulation Intern will work on advancing coupled electromagnetic and thermal circuit model workflows and models of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet components for SPARC and ARC. The role includes collaborating across different departments to analyze experimental data and to validate our models.
Program Details:
- 13-26 week internship
- 40-50 hours per week with set hourly salary based on year in school
- Opportunities on site in Somerville, MA. If an intern is going to be on site, you will be responsible for your own transportation and housing
- Specific project assignments and required technical skillset will vary based on the team’s existing need.
- Opportunities available for currently enrolled college students in all levels of schooling from bachelor’s degree to PhD
- Interns must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer
What you'll do:
- Analyze cable magnet design concepts for ARC via reduced models capturing global and local effects
- Test new modules for simulation workflows against independent models & experimental data
- Understand experimental setups & data to validate & understand physical mechanisms measured
- Write clean, documented, version-controlled code that contributes to shared simulation tools
- Present methods and results to the R&D team and summarize the work in a final report
What we’re looking for:
- Pursuing a degree with a focus in Physics or Engineering (e.g. Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear) or a related field
- Coding experience through coursework, research or personal projects (e.g. Python, MATLAB, C++)
- Foundational coursework in electromagnetism and thermodynamics or heat transfer
- Proficiency in at least one programming language, preferably Python
- Working understanding of electromagnetics and heat transfer fundamentals
- Clear written and verbal communication; able to work independently and in a team
Must-have Requirements:
- Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
- Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics
