Role Overview
The Institutional Giving Officer is responsible for building and maintaining an institutional giving program that supports our nine collaborative funds as well as general operating support to Borealis. This position is responsible for writing funding proposals and reports in a clear and compelling manner and supporting the development and program teams in cultivating and stewarding of strong relationships with donors. Under minimal oversight and within overall objectives, the Institutional Giving Officer resolves complex problems and assesses different strategies to enhance processes and systems for consideration.

Responsibilities
Develop Grant Proposals and Reports

  • In collaboration with program staff, develop and write compelling grant proposals that advance Borealis' mission, core strategies, programs, and engage potential donors
  • Manage the development of 8-10 grant proposals and reports monthly, from initiation to submission to project implementation in collaboration with both internal staff and donors to ensure alignment between Borealis proposals and donor priorities
  • Manage and steward a portfolio of five- to eight-figure grants that fund Borealis' programs and core operations, develop reports, and coordinate touchpoints to ensure the organization maintains strong relationships with donors and secures renewed/ increased funding where possible
  • Act as development department liaison to program staff, helping to refine goals, objectives and desired outcomes, track the progress of grants, and fulfill all grant obligations
  • Oversee all grant tracking in Salesforce CRM, ensuring accurate and complete records for donors and grants

Institutional Donor Prospecting and Cultivation

  • Research and vet prospective donors for new and existing programs, develop cultivation strategies, draft donor briefings and organize meetings and site visits
  • Develops strategic engagement plans for existing and prospective institutional donors and their representatives
  • Initiate, nurture, and deepen relationships with institutions with the intention of securing and renewing multi-year financial support
  • Research and stay informed of emerging trends and best practices in institutional giving
  • Create additional donor- facing assets as needed, such as presentations, concept notes, one-pagers, etc.
  • Support fund directors with donor engagement by helping prep for calls, joining donor calls as needed, take notes, and support follow-up activities

Fundraising Strategy Support

  • Support the development of cross-fund fundraising strategies, including implementation of key activities, development of collateral and more
  • Support and inform organization- wide fundraising frameworks and strategies
  • Innovate on cross-fund strategies and concepts to bring on new donors and increase giving from current donors
  • Support funds with their donor-facing engagement opportunities including donor meetings, presentations, webinars, etc, as needed

Team Support and Collaboration

  • Work closely with multiple internal teams to resolve issues, design and implement process changes, and make enhancements to grant and donor tracking systems
  • Contribute strongly to cross-disciplinary teamwork, collaboration, and planning for the organization
  • Partner with the Finance Department to ensure all financial materials for reports and applications are submitted appropriately

Other Duties

  • As a member of the Borealis staff, the Institutional Giving Officer performs certain functions that are not specific to their role, but support the organization as a whole. This includes:
  • Submitting and approving expense reports and timecards by stated deadlines.
  • Attending all staff meetings, required trainings, and events.
  • Participating in organizational development and change processes, including serving on committees or special project teams.
  • Model Borealis' culture and values; align outcomes, practices, and communications within the organization's culture.
  • Manage special projects and other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field with five (5) years of experience, or a combination of education and experience
  • Five (5) years of experience in nonprofit development or fundraising role, including working with institutional funders
  • Experience with CRM databases, Salesforce preferred
  • Experience using systems and tools such as Zoom, Google Suite, Slack, and Asana

  • Excellent writing skills, grant writing experience, and the ability to synthesize information, interpret data and incorporate feedback as part of the writing process
  • Strong oral communication skills and demonstrated experience building relationships with funders
  • Ability to handle confidential donor information with sensitivity and integrity
  • Ability to problem-solve, plan, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build relationships within a diverse virtual work environment
  • Proven project management, multi-tasking, and prioritization skills, with excellent attention to detail and good follow-through

This job operates in a professional, virtual, home office or co-working environment, with local and national travel.
