BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems (SMS) is seeking a skilled Multispectral/Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will conduct research and analysis to understand and improve the utility of new multispectral and hyperspectral data for Intelligence Community (IC) customers through research and development (R&D) of remote sensor data, customer engagement and support, and improvements to the data processing and analysis techniques. The goal of this work is to develop capabilities to transition to a streamlined production process. You will work with a team of engineers and scientists that includes spectral Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) who will provide technical guidance as you develop a deep understanding of the technology with an eye on future advancements.
The Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers' missions. What You'll Do:
  • Conduct research and analysis to determine spectral data utility and application to IC targets and problems.
  • Improve and develop data analysis processing techniques and algorithms.
  • Perform hyperspectral sensor data characterization.
  • Identify data and analytic challenges and gaps.
  • Evaluate and understand data formats.
  • Evaluate and monitor data quality.
  • Research and develop novel processing techniques and algorithms.
  • Test the performance of algorithms, tools and processing methods and make recommendations to increase accuracy and efficiency.
  • Coordinate research activities within a team.
  • Collaborate with customers at all levels within the IC customer base.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.
Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills
  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 2 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • A current, active Secret security clearance is required with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI.
  • 2+ years of experience in spectral or EO/IR data analysis, including knowledge of algorithms and processing methodologies for atmospheric compensation, material detection and scene classification.
  • Foundational knowledge of electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) systems, remote sensor data and phenomenology.
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB and ENVI is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Master of Science (MS) or higher in Engineering, Physics, Remote Sensing, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Experience with Multispectral/Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Technologies, Science, or Analysis.
  • Active TS/SCI security clearance.
  • Skills in at least one of the following: Systems Engineering, Software Development, Machine Learning, Algorithm Development.
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in engineering or science (chemistry, geology, physics, remote sensing, etc.).

Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $72150 - $122655
Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
