Description of Work

This Hydrogeologist position is located in the Division of Waste Management, Brownfields Redevelopment Section (BRS). The Hydrogeologist will provide technical project management on properties working toward completing brownfields agreements and the compliance with said agreements. This position will be responsible for working with prospective developers of brownfields properties, their environmental consultants and legal counsel. In addition to providing technically sound project management, the hydrogeologist will conduct risk evaluations utilizing applicable DEQ protocols, contribute to the continued growth of the BRS, and effectively communicate with the Section’s stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
• Project Management. Provide technical oversight, evaluate land use(s), oversee environmental assessment, and conduct risk evaluations for the purposes of ensuring that prospective developers protect public health and the environment when redeveloping brownfield properties. The Hydrogeologist will be responsible for preparing the legal documents related to a Notice of Brownfields Property, as well as ensuring compliance with the Brownfields Land Use Restrictions.
• Risk Assessment and Management. Using factors such as chemical types, concentration levels and exposure routes (such as direct contact, inhalation, surface water, groundwater, and air) the Hydrogeologist will determine if sufficient data is available, then conduct risk assessments using DEQ established protocols and tools with data provided. Using those assessments and other factors, evaluate what risk management is needed to safely redevelop Brownfields properties.
• Evaluation of Vapor Intrusion Risk and Mitigation Measures. The Hydrogeologist will conduct risk evaluations from various site media to determine vapor intrusion risk, review vapor mitigation designs for completion in accordance with existing DEQ guidance and evaluate pre- and post-occupancy data to determine if vapor mitigation systems are functioning as intended.
• Communication. Present and communicate technical information to project teams, stakeholders, and the public, as needed.
