Summary:
Wanted: Conscientious and dedicated High School Sports Editor to work the greater Boston area and build a relationship with our audience, HS coaches, administrators and athletes; break news, experiment with form and substance to drive engagement and subscriptions. Join our experienced, collaborative sports team at the Herald in Boston, where our readership is voracious and dedicated. We cover high schools like some cover the pros; it's an essential part of the Herald. You'll fill the massive shoes of a retiring 35-year veteran who is the dean of HS sports in Eastern Massachusetts.
This position requires the individual to work nights and weekends regularly.
What you will do
Working with a Regional Sports Editor and his assistant, you'll be responsible for extensive HS coverage of approximately 225 schools in Eastern Massachusetts
Network with HS AD's, coaches, and players in Eastern Massachusetts. as well as representatives from the state's governing body (MIAA) and the public
Identify, recruit, mentor, and assign stories from a pool of roughly 10-15 freelancers and photographers
Oversee, develop, schedule, and edit content for publication in print and online
Plan and coordinate with an eye toward almost year-round content
Write occasional features and news items as required

Conditions of Employment:

Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, training sessions, and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed
Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
