The HPC + Gridding Scientist develops and optimizes meshing algorithms for reservoir simulations, collaborates with teams, and provides technical leadership.
The summary above was generated by AI

OVERVIEW:
Performs and directs major projects related to the development of meshing algorithms in reservoir simulation applications.  Implements new and improves existing meshing algorithms in a full-field reservoir simulator.  Performs testing and profiling studies of implemented algorithms on real field models to validate mesh quality and optimize performance.  Maintains knowledge of the state-of-the-art in research and industry.  Provides supports to colleagues and customers using developed features and works closely with team members to integrate support for developed algorithms in their work.

Develops and coordinates detailed studies to implement existing and/or novel meshing algorithms to accurately represent subsurface grids used in reservoir simulation. Participates in profiling and scaling studies to identify hotspots and optimize code performance on modern supercomputers.  May perform as a consultant on reservoir engineering studies, technical problems, and projects involving current field operations.

This position is responsible to an appropriate level of supervision for the solution of complex engineering problems requiring a level of ability and experience beyond that normally available at the Engineer II level. Supervision is limited to consultation regarding the scope and intent of the study to be conducted. Assignments are to be completed with a minimum level of supervision; technical direction will be supplied by this level to additional engineers which may be temporarily assigned to the project due to magnitude and complexity. The results of all studies or recommendations are reviewed by the Supervising Engineer of the Unit/Group to which it is assigned.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to design and develop scientific software.

  • Work with parent company (Saudi Aramco) technical experts to establish technical requirements for software.

  • Design algorithms and implement methods to generate parallel unstructured meshes for reservoir simulation software.

  • Develop dynamic mesh refinement and coarsening algorithms to improve mesh quality and reduce computation time.

  • Profile meshing algorithms to identify hotspots and perform optimization to reduce computation time and improve efficiency.

  • Attend scientific conferences and read technical publications to maintain up-to-date knowledge of computational modeling.

  • Author technical reports, articles, and patents.

  • Make and deliver technical presentations within Aramco Americas and Saudi Aramco, as well as at outside technical conferences.

  • Represent Aramco Americas & Saudi Aramco effectively to external organizations.

  • Consults with and provides technical guidance to Management and related engineering groups on matters which fall into his/her area of expert technical competence including budget studies, development programs, reservoir studies and equipment purchases and studies.

  • Reviews work of engineers directed on projects where additional manpower has been assigned.

  • Assists in training and onboarding of new engineering personnel.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • B.S. Degree in Science/Engineering/Physics/Mathematics discipline as appropriate for the area of expertise for the assigned jobs.

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Science/Engineering/Physics/Mathematics preferred.

  • Seven years (7) experience in a substantive industrial, technological or laboratory area relevant to the job’s assignment.

  • Candidate should be proficient in Python and C++11 (or later).

  • Candidate should be proficient with MPI and have experience developing distributed-memory parallel scientific applications.

  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined.

  • Candidate should be comfortable working independently or as part of a project team.  Frequent project presentation and travel to meetings at conferences and universities is expected.  Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
