ABOUT MAVEN

Maven is the home for human expertise on the Internet. We started with practical, professional courses on key skills taught by leading experts in your field. Think: learning AI Product Management from a head of product at OpenAI or an engineering lead at Meta. Our cohort-based model means engagement rates are 80-90% instead of the 5-10% from video-based learning. Over 500 experts use Maven and they earn $40M/year on the platform.

Maven now aims to be the #1 destination for expert creator businesses that include workshops, courses, corporate consulting, 1:1 coaching, and educational products. Today, we're direct to consumer but eventually we'll offer certificate programs, MBA-like programs, and sell directly to businesses.

We’re the industry leaders in a growing segment of the creator economy. As the need to learn AI grows, Maven has become the place to learn valuable skills. As AI takes over more mid-level IC tasks, access to human expertise is ever-more important. We've raised $25 million from Andreessen Horowitz, First Round, and a supportive network of industry angels. Join us to do the best work of your career, and help every professional access the world’s most impressive human experts.

ROLE OVERVIEW

This role reports to the CEO and is either at “Head of” or “VP” level for the right person. Compensation is $225k-$325k with competitive equity. Fully remote.

Maven has created a new sub-vertical within the creator economy - experts. Today, we have 500+ high profile former execs or super ICs who came from top-tier companies (Anthropic, Meta, Stripe, Notion) on the platform. They often do multiple things at once: consulting, advising, and teaching. Some have a day job, others don’t. They have 10-100k+ followers on LinkedIn, and may have a Substack or an X following.

Maven’s marketplace and software platform allows experts to scale their reach, build their leads list, and then monetize via consumer education, corporate workshops, coaching, and consulting.

Your job will be to build the system and manage the 4-person team that recruits experts to Maven. This is part-sales management, part-onboarding, and part-VIP concierge recruitment.

Just to be clear: you will spend 50% of your time on calls actively recruiting experts. Another 50% will be spent managing a team of expert partner managers who are doing the same. You’ll also be on the executive team and have tons of growth opportunities to run more divisions within Maven.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

To be successful, your team will scour the internet to identify experts with an affinity for teaching, are at the right point in their career arc, and have the credibility and motivation to create a high impact expert business. You’ll help them see why using Maven will be rewarding for them personally, professionally, and financially.

Your responsibilities are:

  • Creative sourcing: define topic opportunities and continuously build prospect lists against them (a.k.a. you’ll find an AI expert in every micro-niche in the world)
  • Consultative sales: work with exec leaders and help them decide if, and when, a Maven expert business is the right move for them
  • Sales operations: develop and implement systems to efficiently manage your pipeline, including outbound outreach, inbound qualification, and direct sales

Your team members will be Delaney and Kirissa, who started in the last few months and are actively pitching new experts every day. While a v1 of the system is built, you will shape and upgrade each part of the sales process into a powerful v2. This role is a peer to Mallory, who leads community and engagement after an instructor has completed their first cohort. You’ll report to the CEO, Gagan.

WHO YOU ARE
  • Drive a pipeline: you are an expert at managing multiple salespeople, including managing the metrics, writing and editing the playbooks, and creating a culture of hustle
  • Excellent IC salesperson: leaders at Maven are always the best ICs at their function, so you should be the best salesperson at the company
  • Taste: our experts have excellent taste, and so should you
TEAM & CULTURE

Maven is committed to having a small, empowered team (currently 25 total), so you should be excited to do your own market research, strategic thinking, end-to-end sales, and day-to-day operations.

We are high-ownership and high-collaboration. We post regular status updates to dedicated Slack channels to get input. If you’re blocked, everyone is there to help (but otherwise we’ll assume you’re on it). This makes Maven a great cross-functional learning environment. Expect direct feedback every single day!

Ownership, collaboration, and feedback are not just nice ideas here; we are fully remote, so they are required. We are a writing-focused company, with no-meeting Wednesdays for getting shit done (as a sales leader, you may have external meetings on this day but you should avoid internal ones). We gather for a week-long offsite twice a year where we discuss company strategy, hack on new product offerings, and get absurdly competitive over random games.

COMPENSATION

$225k-$325k in salary with strong benefits and equity.

Salary is open to review based on candidate experience; please apply if you know you're a great candidate.

LOCATION

Remote; US time zones +/- 1 hour

Expect to travel ~1x/month mostly to SF, NYC, LA, Austin.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
