The Role

We’re looking for a strategic, hands-on Head of Finance / VP Finance to serve as the company’s senior finance leader and trusted business partner to the CEO and leadership team. As Volta’s first senior finance hire, you will build and scale the finance function during a critical phase of growth and commercialization.

This role will lead company-wide financial planning, fundraising support, board reporting, and operational finance while helping build the infrastructure needed to scale a global biotech company spanning hardware systems, consumables, software, and R&D. You’ll partner closely with leaders across Operations, Manufacturing, Commercial, and R&D to support strategic decision-making and ensure strong financial discipline as the business grows.

Day 1 to Year 1:

  • Serve as a strategic finance partner to the CEO and leadership team, helping drive company strategy, growth planning, and capital allocation decisions.
  • Lead company-wide FP&A, including budgeting, forecasting, cash runway management, scenario planning, and KPI development.
  • Build financial models and operational insights to support commercialization, manufacturing scale-up, pricing, and long-term business planning.
  • Own board and investor financial reporting and support fundraising activities, including diligence, financial storytelling, and investor presentations.
  • Partner cross-functionally with R&D, Commercial, Operations, and Manufacturing leaders to guide resource allocation and strategic decision-making.
  • Build and scale the finance function over time, including hiring and managing accounting and finance team members as the company grows.
  • Oversee financial operations and external partners across accounting, audit, tax, payroll, compliance, and treasury while building scalable internal processes and controls.
  • Support global financial operations, including inventory management, cost accounting, international tax considerations, and oversight of future international subsidiaries.
  • Within 3 months you’ll…

Develop a deep understanding of Volta’s business model, commercialization plans, manufacturing operations, and financial drivers. Build core forecasting models and reporting processes while partnering closely with the CEO and leadership team on budgeting, cash planning, and strategic initiatives. Begin evaluating systems, controls, and operational processes needed to scale the finance function.

    Within 12 months you’ll…

Own company-wide financial planning and board reporting processes, support fundraising initiatives, and establish scalable financial operations across the business. Implement improved financial systems, reporting frameworks, and operational KPIs to support decision-making across manufacturing, commercial, and R&D functions. Begin building out the internal finance and accounting organization.

    At 12+ months you’ll…

Serve as a key strategic leader helping guide Volta through its next stage of growth and commercialization. Lead a growing finance and accounting organization supporting global operations, including future international subsidiaries. Establish finance as a critical business partner across the organization, enabling scalable growth, operational excellence, and strong investor confidence.

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field required; MBA, CPA, or advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive finance experience, with a strong background in FP&A, strategic finance, and business partnering in high-growth or venture-backed environments.
  • Proven ability to serve as a strategic partner to executive leadership, supporting fundraising, board reporting, operational scaling, and company growth initiatives.
  • Strong financial modeling, forecasting, and analytical skills, with experience translating complex business data into actionable insights and operational decisions.
  • Experience in hardware, biotech, life sciences, medtech, or other operationally complex environments, including familiarity with cost accounting, inventory management, manufacturing finance, and global operations.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to build scalable finance processes, manage cross-functional stakeholders, and grow finance and accounting teams over time.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, hands-on startup environment with evolving priorities and ambiguity.

  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
