Leads the operational side of a growing engineering organization across software and hardware. Owns engineering roadmaps, quarterly priorities, hiring, organizational structure, performance management, leadership development, processes, and cross-functional execution. Partners with the CTO on technical direction and supports the use of AI throughout engineering. The role oversees approximately 35 engineers initially, with responsibility for scaling the organization substantially.
The Company
We believe general-purpose, generally-intelligent robots will be built in our lifetimes. Robots will work in our factories, move our goods, walk on our streets and eventually be in our homes. To build that future, research and deployment must work in lockstep: real-world operation must make the technology better and better technology must make deployment easier. We're looking for the thinkers, builders, and researchers who want to be part of that loop.
As an AI robotics company that deploys its inventions directly into the facilities that need them, on state-of-the-art hardware, every line of code written at Tutor has a direct impact on the global, physical economy.
Our Culture
We believe that something truly special can happen when talented, motivated people work together; at Tutor, every member of our team is empowered to have real impact in everything that they do. We're characterized by both technical excellence and next-level collaboration and respect.
About the Role
Tutor is hiring a Head of Engineering to run the operational side of our engineering organization, as a partner to our CTO. The CTO sets technical direction and leads the company's longer-term bets. You make engineering run: the roadmap, hiring, team structure, performance, and the way we work.
The team is about 35 engineers across software and hardware today and will grow substantially. We care about speed, about using AI throughout engineering, and about keeping things easy for the people doing the work. You report to the CTO.
What You'll Do
- Own the roadmap: Set quarterly priorities and keep engineering delivering against business outcomes
- Grow the team: Lead recruiting and build the organization as the company scales
- Run the organization: Set team structure, manage performance, and develop engineering leaders
- Shape how we work: Own the engineering process, with speed, AI and ease as its goals
- Partner across the company: Work with the CTO on technical direction and with the leadership team on priorities
What We're Looking For
- You have led an engineering organization through significant growth
- You have run software and hardware engineering, or software engineering at a company that ships hardware
- You have worked closely with a technical founder or CTO
- You are a strong operator: planning, hiring, and running a team well
- You bring AI into how engineering works and support the people pushing it
Nice to Have
- Experience in robotics, manufacturing, or products deployed in the field
- Experience building an organization from tens to hundreds of engineers
About Our Roles & Titles
Everyone in our R&D organization, including the people who lead it, holds the title Member of Technical Staff (MoTS). Our job postings use standard titles so you can find us. If you join Tutor, you'll be a MoTS who runs engineering. Head of Engineering is how you'll be known outside the company, because building the team means being legible to the people you're recruiting. In an ideal world everyone here would simply be a MoTS; external titles exist only where the outside world needs them.
