About the Role

We're looking for a talented lawyer ready to join our Future of Work Team and dive into the dynamic convergence of law and policy at Instacart. In this role, you'll collaborate with teams across various departments to navigate, shape, and foresee the intricate tapestry of regulatory and legislative landscapes, including labor law, that impact every facet of our business. Your expertise will be crucial in crafting informed strategies and compliance plans to steer the business, all while continuously expanding your legal acumen in response to the evolving challenges we face.



About the Team

Instacart’s Legal Team provides top-notch service and counseling to various parts of Instacart’s business. You will join a proactive and deeply engaged team that values collaboration and innovative problem-solving. We take a practical, efficient, solution-oriented approach to everything we do and aim to build strong and trusting relationships with our team, leadership, and cross-functional partners. We are looking for highly motivated teammates who are ready to dig in and hit the ground running.

About the Job 

  • Partner with cross-functional teams (e.g., Operations, Policy & Government Affairs, Communications, Product, and Engineering) to shape outcomes in regulatory and legislative proceedings affecting Instacart's business
  • Review, draft, evaluate, and advise on legislation relating to the gig economy, retailers, consumer product groups, consumers, and workers
  • Advise internal teams on various laws and regulations, including labor law, ensuring compliance across the company. Work in tandem with the Employment Law Team to address and manage employee relations issues successfully
  • Develop and execute on procedures and product changes that guarantee adherence to legislative and regulatory requirements. Keep current with labor law changes and communicate updates to pertinent departments
  • Provide expert legal advice on various issues affecting the company and interpret relevant state and federal statutes, rules, and regulations. Collaborate with outside counsel to defend the company's interests and support legislative analysis as well as advocacy initiatives
  • Leverage and manage outside counsel, trade organizations, coalitions, and experts to evaluate and initiate strategic litigation and regulatory responses
  • Engage with and develop relationships with industry groups and partners; serve as a company representative for cross-industry engagement opportunities
  • Gain subject matter expertise in new areas as novel issues and topics emerge



About You

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree
  • Admission to at least one State Bar
  • Experience in legislative drafting or analyzing legislation
  • Minimum 3-5 years of relevant experience, with at least 2+ years in labor law (experience with National Labor Relations Board elections, unfair labor practice charges, collective bargaining, and interpreting and implementing union contracts preferred)
  • Proven track record of providing pragmatic and reasoned advice to business partners
  • Excellent writing and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • In-house or large law firm experience
