Day in the Life of a Functional Solution Architect in the Strategic Advisory Practice
As an FSA in the Advisory Team specializing in revenue operations management consulting, you will engage directly with our most prestigious clients’ leadership teams, bringing a wealth of expertise and engaging interpersonal communication skills, to discuss, unravel, challenge, strategize, articulate and ultimately oversee a team to propose engaging solution paths to reach their most important organizational objectives.
You will be jointly or fully responsible for leading our internal and client project teams through executive outcomes and objectives alignment, functional requirements gathering workshop facilitation, understanding the architecture, data, and associated functional design components, validating and delivering a compelling final readout of the solution end-state vision to our customers. The FSA is expected to extend as leader or oversight of the build and deployment of the proposed solution/transformation project.
Your technical strengths will be combined with outcomes-based thinking, best practices recommendations, empathetic customer guidance, and demonstration of strategic Salesforce transformation value delivery. You will steer and provoke insightful and focused conversation to aid in describing potentially complex but elegant and feasible designs, help our clients make conscientious architectural and functional system capability decisions, and guide them through the understanding, ratifying, and subsequent development of their new systems and functional capabilities.
Your technical prowess is matched by your ability to gain trust and confidence from our clients by demonstrating ownership, leadership, insight, and a rapid grasp of business complexity that enables you to articulate valuable solution paths and end states.
Additionally, you may be asked to collaborate with our internal Neocol leadership, sales, or practice teams to offer assistance, guidance, expertise, develop assets, provide input, help/train team members, or contribute to internal projects that promote our product offerings, practice capabilities, shared expertise, or other Neocol company initiatives. We admire and promote open, critical thinking and creative problem solving skills that uplift our colleagues and demonstrate your desire to learn, share, and grow alongside others.
During the lifecycle of your projects or assignments you will be expected to:
- Be familiar with and follow the appropriate Neocol Functional Consulting playbook (standards and methodologies) alongside the project Statement of Work, ensuring the expected approach is applied, scope areas are covered adequately, scope creep is avoided and/or immediately called out, quality and depth of project deliverables is promoted, and that during design/roadmapping considerations, a clear focus is on delivering functional designs and outcomes the client/project describes.
- Perform and share research on customers, industries, or products that will equip and enhance your presence and relevance to the project and customer needs or circumstances.
- Engage effectively and convincingly with client C-Suite executives/leaders, through to individual client business or technology/IT representatives and workshop participants, using both a technical and non-technical approach and nature to convey ideas, align expectations, and explain benefit statements or concepts convincingly and with authority.
- Prepare or tailor discovery workshop assets (decks, sheets, images, documents etc.) for audiences that will facilitate valuable, robust, and focused conversations around the strategic, functional, or technical topic at hand.
- Participate, plan, and/or facilitate strategic and functional discovery sessions, blending technical and functional concepts and empathetic approaches that demonstrate an understanding of client challenges and elicit valuable, feasible solution approaches towards resolution while applying diligent time management and intent in achieving workshop outcomes/objectives.
- Exhibit curiosity and willingness to “deep dive” into business process needs and requirements where needed (e.g. where identifying process or technology areas with key complexity, deviations from best practice, potential high value improvement or key gaps, or called out as major pain points etc.) and expanding on those with clarity and authority.
- Demonstrate a grasp of the business and/or technical needs and challenges and propose relevant solutions or available functionality that should satisfy the clients functional requirements, while guiding customers towards best practices as much as possible when considering the solution they need to develop for.
- Identify, recommend, and separate customer functional requirements according to scope and value delivered (alignment and promotion of stated project objectives and end state organizational improvements) as inputs to a prioritized roadmap with phased deliverables for the future-state roadmap.
- Coordinate and facilitate the sourcing, development, and/or demonstration of product/functionality demonstrations, proof-of-concepts, or similar interactive assets as needed and only where appropriate (e.g. to accelerate a design decision or validate end state capabilities to expedite a workshop).
- Employ engaging, professional conversational tactics and expertise to ensure client/audience engagement, focus, and trustworthiness.
- Collaborate in real time with colleagues (e.g. Business Analysts, Project Managers, Developers etc.) to ensure key or unresolved/missing decisions, concerns, topics or assets are sufficiently and properly documented so that they support follow-on analysis or a record of actions and follow-up activities to achieve this.
- Ensure that ratified design decisions and associated functional capabilities and limitations are upheld and reinforced during a subsequent solution development and implementation project (only offering alternatives which will not compromise the integrity or value of the final deliverables, and immediately initiating necessary change documentation and signoff where needed).
- Provide (or solicit through CoE or other resources) solution development leadership, guidance, assistance, collaboration, and support to the wider project team to promote achievement of our shared goals and deadlines.
- Effectively and continually identify and communicate project scope, time, resourcing, budget, performance, functionality, or quality concerns or risks to the project team/leaders as appropriate.
- Oversee or participate in the quality control, testing, deployment, stability, and overall performance of the delivered solution end state, such that it meets objectives and delivers the documented end-user functionality while considering the necessary foundations or scalability required for planned/known future expansion (i.e. subsequent transformation roadmap phases).
During your role as a trusted RCA expert, you will exhibit:
- “Lifelong learning” - we continuously learn, share, and apply new technologies and consulting engagement best practices, both through self-elected study and assigned courses/certifications. The nature of our customers, new company operational models, shifts in industry norms and expectations, and the acceleration of technology means we must maintain broad knowledge of these developments and apply them creatively in front of our customers in real time. We don’t say “i don’t know how”, we say “I can learn this and bring my perspective to it”.
- “Thinking on your feet” - A great functional consultant can apply creative lateral thinking and problem-solving skills even to unfamiliar situations. We do not always have all the answers, but we can quickly familiarize ourselves with a scenario, can understand and differentiate questions from problems, can relate to unique challenges, and can apply our critical thinking skills and expertise to formulate feasible and relevant resolution paths. We don’t say “This is unfamiliar and scary” we say “I understand the root cause, and am willing to risk a calculated solution path”
- “Flexibility to achieve shared goals” - your skills across technology, processes, operations, and customer relationship nurturing may be called upon beyond an immediate project, assignment, or even this job description (while respecting your time and workload). We don’t say “no” or “I don’t know how”; we say “I can figure this out, help, and learn” then get stuck in.
- “Extreme ownership” - we are all considered accountable for the success of our clients and colleagues. As such, and especially as a senior role in the practice, you are encouraged and expected to speak up where things can be better, or where ownership of your duties are compromised, so that we can all take accountability and consider remedies. We don’t say “that is not my responsibility”, we say “I can ensure success by taking and owning action”.
