At Benchmark Health, we’re not just transforming mental health care—we’re empowering professionals like you to grow and thrive. Here’s what makes us different:

  • Mission-Driven Culture: Join a company committed to improving lives and making mental health care more accessible for all.
  • Innovative Work Environment: Be part of a cutting-edge team that’s revolutionizing behavioral health care through precision-based triage for specialty behavioral health referrals.
  • Career Growth: Contribute to a fast-paced startup with clear paths to professional advancement and leadership.
  • Early Stage: Play a pivotal role in shaping a rapidly growing, early stage start up where your contributions directly influence the culture, processes and long term success.

About the Role

As a Fullstack Software Engineer at Benchmark Health, you'll own meaningful features from conception to deployment, directly impacting how people access mental healthcare. This is a hands-on role where you'll shape both the user experience and technical architecture of our platform.

You'll work across our TypeScript stack – building intuitive React interfaces, architecting robust Node.js services, and designing scalable data models with Prisma. Your code will power complex clinical workflows, real-time care matching algorithms, and health outcomes tracking systems. This isn't just about writing code; it's about understanding user needs, making smart technical tradeoffs, and shipping solutions that work in a highly operational, regulated environment.

Key Expectations

  • You'll own features end-to-end, from initial design conversations through production deployment.
  • You'll collaborate directly with clinicians and users to understand workflows before writing a single line of code.
  • You'll balance moving fast with building maintainable systems that scale.
  • You'll contribute to technical decisions that shape our platform for years to come.

Why Join Benchmark Health

  • Mission-Driven Impact: Use your technical skills to directly contribute to solving critical challenges in mental healthcare access and quality.
  • Foundational Role: Be a key player in shaping the strategy and infrastructure of a growing, innovative company.
  • Interesting Technical Challenges: Tackle complex problems at the intersection of data, cloud technology, and healthcare.
  • Growth & Learning: Thrive in a collaborative, dynamic environment with significant opportunities for professional development.
  • Inclusive Culture: Be part of a diverse team that values every member's contribution to our shared mission.
  • Competitive Package: We offer a competitive compensation package, performance incentives, and equity participation.
  • Benefits: Enjoy generous paid time off and work from our fantastic office location in Brookline, MA.

Responsibilities

Build & Ship Products Users Love

  • Own features from ideation to production, partnering closely with product and design to create intuitive experiences.
  • Translate complex clinical workflows into elegant technical solutions.
  • Gather user feedback and iterate quickly based on real-world usage.

Develop Across the Stack

  • Build responsive, accessible React interfaces with strong attention to UX details.
  • Design and implement scalable backend services and APIs using Node.js and TypeScript.
  • Create efficient data models and migrations using Prisma and PostgreSQL.
  • Integrate with AI services (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini) for triage and navigation features.

Scale Our Technical Foundation

  • Make architectural decisions that balance immediate needs with long-term scalability.
  • Implement monitoring, logging, and observability to ensure system reliability.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes.
  • Help establish engineering best practices as we grow.

Collaborate & Communicate

  • Work directly with a small, mission-driven team where your voice matters.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Participate in code reviews and technical discussions.
  • Mentor junior engineers as the team expands.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 3+ years building production web applications with TypeScript/JavaScript
  • Demonstrated ability to own features end-to-end in a collaborative environment
  • Strong foundation in both frontend (React) and backend (Node.js) development
  • Experience with relational databases and ORMs (PostgreSQL, Prisma preferred)
  • Track record of shipping user-facing products and iterating based on feedback
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills – you can explain the "why" behind technical decisions to any stakeholder
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and evolving requirements in a fast-paced startup
  • Located in or willing to relocate to the Boston area (hybrid role with in-office collaboration)
  • Genuine excitement about using technology to improve mental healthcare access

What Sets Strong Candidates Apart:

  • Experience at early-stage startups where you wore multiple hats
  • Demonstrated product sense and UX instincts beyond just implementation
  • Natural collaborator who enjoys working closely with non-technical teammates
  • Bias toward shipping and learning over perfecting code in isolation
  • Contributions to technical architecture and infrastructure decisions
  • Healthcare industry experience, especially with HIPAA compliance or clinical workflows
  • Familiarity with modern DevOps practices (Docker, Kubernetes, cloud platforms)
  • Experience integrating LLMs and AI services into production applications

  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
