The Boeing Test and Evaluation (BT&E) Flight Test Safety Engineering team is seeking a Flight Test Safety Official – Proprietary Programs to join our team in Las Vegas, NV.

The individual will be involved in Phantom Works proprietary test programs performing operational, ground and environmental safety engineering tasks.  The individual must have a strong understanding of flight test, aircraft operations, ground and ramp operations, risk identification, and mitigation. This person should be able to provide independent oversight to programs to validate their risk assessment and mitigating actions. In addition, this person must be able to investigate non-normal incidents and determine if corrective actions are required to immediately contain threat and further mitigate risk. This individual will be joining a team of safety engineers and Aviation Safety Officers who collaborate in a very dynamic, fast-paced development, and test environment to manage operational safety risk and promote mishap prevention.

This position will require 25% domestic travel based on business needs.

Our team is currently hiring for Lead or Senior Level Flight Test Safety Official – Proprietary Programs.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate within a cross section of program disciplines in a very dynamic, fast-paced development and test environment to promote mishap prevention

  • Manage safety requirements of the product/program in a collaborative environment with specific emphasis on test operations

  • Perform critical safety engineering activities to support ground and flight test/launch preparation and operations, to include test hazard analyses, development of test procedures, and active participation in ground/flight test readiness reviews

  • Perform safety risk management activities in a highly dynamic operational/test environment

  • Responsible for maintaining relationship and regular communication with Government Flight Representative (GFR)

  • Provide flight and ground test operations safety support (including OSHA/EHS) during testing, to include active participation in pretest briefs/debriefs, after action reviews, and develop pre-mishap plans and notification procedures

  • Evaluate customer/operational needs and requirements specifications to develop safety requirements, constraints, and operating limits

  • Review engineering design specifications, test operations, change proposals, deficiency reports, and deviation/waiver requests for potential flight test safety impacts

  • Conduct periodic safety survey audits and assessments

  • Leads and participates in incident investigations and root cause/corrective action analyses

  • Leads and facilitates aircraft impound investigations

  • Interface with customer and program subject matter experts

  • Active participant in Systems Safety Working Groups, Safety Review Boards and Tech Manual Review Boards and Test Readiness Reviews to include test plan signoffs

  • Implement Safety Management System (SMS) and safety best practices

  • Complete Accident / Incident / Damage Reports as required

  • Engage in regular communication with Chief Engineers and Test Program Managers

  • Provide mission and on-call mishap support with supporting documentation as needed

  • Prepare presentations, analyses, and reports for government/customer safety boards, program design reviews, and test/mission readiness reviews

  • Deliver oral and written presentations to peers, program management, senior leadership, customer, and regulatory agencies

  • Comply with relevant aviation safety rules and regulations

  • Stay current with emerging advanced technologies relevant to product/program

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience): 

  • 3+ years of experience with risk identification and mitigation plans

  • 5+ years of relevant technical experience in a combination of aviation safety, systems safety analysis, safety management system, ground test, flight test, aviation operations or test hazard analysis in a commercial and/or military environment

  • Capable of traveling 25% of the time

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Level 5: 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Experience in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

  • Experience in Safety Management Systems training and experience (ICAO Annex 19, 14 CFR Part 5, and FAA AC 21-58 & AC 120-92D)

  • Experience with various aircraft systems, flight test operations, test safety, aviation safety programs, test hazard analysis, aviation safety investigations, aviation mishap investigations

  • Experienced in communicating and working within a team environment with emphasis on first pass quality

  • Experience in accident and incident investigations and root cause corrective action training

  • Experience system safety engineering (MIL-STD-882, ARP4761 and DO178B/254)

  • Experience with manned aircraft, flying test bed, and weapons systems

  • Experience with flight and ground operations

  • Possess current pilot certificate or aircrew experience

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

Summary Pay Range for Lead level (Level 4):  $125,800 – $170,200

Summary Pay Range for Senior level (Level 5):  $150,450 – $203,550
