Slate is hiring a features editor to expand our longer-form roster with standout reporting, essays, and other work that deepens our daily offering. We’re looking for an experienced, enterprising editor with a wide range of interests and knowledge to match. The ideal candidate will be just as comfortable directing tricky, sensitive reporting as they are fine-tuning a big essay’s argument, and they will have a strong rolodex of writers with a clear record of commissioning standout feature work. This job will also be an active part of the newsroom, with day-to-day idea generation and editing staff writers alongside the longer work at the core of the role.

This position is full time, on staff, with benefits. Slate welcomes candidates with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. The position is located in Slate’s offices in New York or D.C., but strong remote candidates may be considered. This job is covered under a collective bargaining agreement between Slate and the Writers Guild of America East. The annual base pay range is $89,000 to $130,000.

Key Responsibilities

  • Commissioning and editing feature stories in many forms, from reporting to analysis to a combination of the two
  • Generating a wide range of ideas for both staff writers and freelancers
  • Editing staff writers on both features and daily work
  • Supporting fellow editors on features and more, including keeping a tight calendar with clear deadlines

Requirements

  • At least five years’ experience working as an editor, with demonstrable feature-editing experience
  • A deep well of story ideas and an understanding of what makes a Slate story stand out
  • Top-notch organizational and communication skills
  • Smarts, kindness, humor, and generosity to match your colleagues

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
