English to Japanese - Legal Translator, Editor, and/or Transcriber (Remote) 

*Status: Freelance Contractor

*Requirements: U.S. Citizenship

Global Language Strategies, a business headquartered in the Washington, D.C. region, is currently seeking a professional freelance linguist to translate, edit, and/or transcribe legal documents from
 English to Japanese. This is a remote position, as needed.

Job Duties:
  • Provide accurate translation, editing of documents, and/or transcription of audio files involving law enforcement and legal subject matter from English to Japanese.
  • Edit audio transcriptions that include slang and idioms.
  • Edit legal documents, such as affidavits, depositions, etc., while demonstrating a strong command of legal terminology in both English and the target language.
  • Excellent written communication skills in English and the target foreign language, with Advanced Proficiency (reading/speaking/listening, writing) level 3-plus in English and the foreign target language, as assessed by the International Language Roundtable (ILR) scale. 
  • Translate, edit, and/or transcribe following the government client’s style guides and quality standards.
  • Use domain-specific terminology. 
  • Review and certify other translators’ work quality, as needed.
  • Highly proficient in MS Office, with the ability to mirror source document format in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiar with the use of CAT tools, such as Trados Studio.



Requirements


*** A U.S. citizen willing to undergo a U.S. government background check to obtain a Public Trust Clearance. 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. 
  • At least 3 years of experience in legal documentation, translating, and/or editing between English and a foreign language.
  • At least 3 years of experience performing audio transcription with the ability to use software to enhance sound and equipment to aid in transcription.
  • Familiar with legal terminology in both English and the target foreign language(s).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Translators and editors must proficiently use CAT tools, such as Trados.


**Preferred Qualifications: **ATA, NAJIT, or other relevant professional certification.
