Loot Labs is on a mission to make collecting fun. We are passionate about bridging the gap between collectible markets and avid collectors. We believe that every collectible tells a story: of passion, nostalgia, and discovery.
Launched in 2023, our flagship product, Boxed.gg, reimagines how fans discover and own their favorite collectibles. Digital entertainment meets real-world collectibles delivered straight to fans' doorsteps, transforming the thrill of the hunt into a seamless, interactive experience.
We are a global, remote-first company, with leadership from Microsoft, Boeing, Lucas Arts, Twitch, and 2K. As we continue to expand into new categories and launch new initiatives, Loot Labs is becoming the ultimate destination for collectors and brands alike. If you’re excited by creativity, community, and building something that sparks joy at scale, you’ll feel right at home here.

We’re looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead the engineering team behind BOXED.GG, our flagship collectibles platform.

You’ll take ownership of day-to-day engineering execution as we scale, managing a small but growing team and guiding how our systems are implemented, maintained, and iterated on.

You’ll collaborate closely with product and engineering leadership to align technical direction and ensure we move fast while maintaining reliability and quality. This is a high-trust, high-autonomy role for an experienced technical leader who’s comfortable being hands-on and wants to help build the systems and culture of a fast-growing startup.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and mentor engineers, managing performance, growth, and day-to-day execution

  • Own BOXED.GG’s day-to-day technical decisions across backend, infrastructure, and frontend, in alignment with the CTO’s architectural direction

  • Own system reliability and infrastructure operations — including cloud management, security, and incident response to ensure BOXED.GG remains stable and resilient

  • Run engineering operations — planning, reviews, releases, and continuous improvement of developer experience and team productivity

  • Drive hiring and onboarding, upholding a high technical bar and strong team culture

  • Collaborate with product, design, and company leadership to translate goals into clear, actionable engineering plans

  • Contribute hands-on through code reviews, implementation guidance, and targeted development work where your technical insight or execution adds leverage

  • Foster a strong engineering culture built on ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement

  • Align with the CTO on long-term architecture and support cross-product work while driving day-to-day implementation and team execution

What We’re Looking For
  • 8+ years of hands-on engineering experience, including time building and scaling modern web applications

  • 2+ years directly managing engineers — setting expectations, running reviews, and driving accountability and growth

  • Experience scaling small teams and developing engineers into strong, independent contributors and future leaders

  • Deep technical foundation across backend systems, infrastructure, and modern web stacks (Node.js, TypeScript, GraphQL, AWS, etc.), with experience designing and operating production systems end-to-end

  • Clear, pragmatic decision-maker who can balance speed and quality in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment

  • High ownership mindset — comfortable running engineering execution, implementation decisions, and operations independently day-to-day

  • Culture builder and people leader who leads with empathy, high standards, and follow-through

Nice to Have:

  • Startup or founder experience, with comfort operating in fast-paced, ambiguous environments

  • Background in e-commerce, marketplaces, or gaming, especially user-driven or transactional products

  • Interest in collectibles, creator platforms, or the intersection of digital and physical experiences

  • Experience building or maintaining real-world multi-tenant features

Working Hours & Compensation
  • Remote-first; candidates anywhere in North America are welcome

  • Required: at least 5 hours of overlap with Pacific Time for collaboration

  • Competitive compensation based on experience and market benchmarks

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
