Stord is building the operating system for modern supply chain: a unified platform handling Order Management, Warehouse Management, Transportation, and Consumer Experience for brands doing over $10B in commerce annually.
WMS is the core engine running Stord's fulfillment operation today, in real time, for real customers. The team is also investing heavily in platform enhancements that matter to Stord's continued growth. This role owns two engineering teams dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the platform.
This role is for a hands-on manager who can lead two teams end-to-end, keep delivery predictable, and stay close enough to the systems to make good calls under pressure. You should have strong engineering fundamentals yourself: this isn't a role for someone who's drifted away from the technical side of the job. If you can build strong teams, keep them delivering, and stay decisive when it counts, this role was built for you.

Why This Role
  • You'll manage engineering on the system that runs Stord's live fulfillment operations, where reliability and correctness matter every single day.
  • The platform work underway in WMS right now is directly tied to Stord's growth trajectory, and you'll have real influence over how it gets built.
  • You'll own two full engineering teams from day one, with real scope and real technical decisions, not a coordination role sitting on top of someone else's teams.
  • We use Elixir as our preferred stack, giving you the chance to build deep expertise in a language built for exactly this kind of real-time, high-throughput system.
What You'll Do

Team Delivery & People Leadership

  • Own the complete people management lifecycle for two engineering teams: hiring, 1:1s, performance management, and career development.
  • Set sprint goals and delivery commitments for both teams, and hold them to a consistent, predictable cadence.
  • Run team ceremonies (planning, retros, standups) in a way that builds trust and team health, not just tracks tickets.

Platform Enhancement

  • Drive your teams' contribution to ongoing platform enhancement initiatives within WMS.
  • Translate business priorities into concrete team goals and technical work breakdown.
  • Partner with product and other WMS engineering managers to sequence enhancement work against ongoing platform needs.

Operational Excellence & Reliability

  • Own the reliability of the systems your teams maintain, since WMS runs live fulfillment operations with no room for silent failure.
  • Build a production mindset on your teams: monitoring, failure modes, and operational readiness as part of the design process, not an afterthought.
  • Lead your teams through incidents in your area of ownership, from response through root cause resolution.

Cross-Team Alignment

  • Partner with peer WMS engineering managers to align priorities, standards, and technical approach across teams.
  • Represent your teams in WMS-wide planning and roadmap discussions.
  • Keep your teams' work coordinated with the rest of the WMS platform so priorities don't drift out of sync.
What We're Looking ForRequired
  • Strong engineering fundamentals. You have a real technical background and can engage credibly in design discussions, code review, and architecture decisions with your teams, not just process and delivery.
  • People management fundamentals. You've managed engineers directly: hiring, performance reviews, feedback, and career development, not just project coordination.
  • Delivery ownership. You can run a scrum team (or two) through predictable, consistent delivery cycles and communicate progress, risk, and blockers clearly to leadership.
  • Comfort with ambiguity. You can set clear direction for your teams even when priorities or requirements shift, without needing everything spelled out before you act.
  • Production mindset. You think about reliability, monitoring, and failure modes as core parts of how your teams build, especially for systems running live operations.
Required Soft Skills
  • Ownership & Accountability: You own outcomes, not just activities. When your team ships, you take pride. When something breaks, you take responsibility and fix the system.
  • Strong Communication: You communicate clearly with engineers, PMs, and executives. You translate technical complexity into business language and vice versa.
  • Delegation & Multiplication: You scale through people, not heroics. You have a history of developing team members and multiplying impact through others.
  • Navigating Ambiguity: You set direction when requirements are evolving. You build alignment across teams and functions without formal authority.
  • Balanced Judgment: You balance innovation with pragmatic delivery constraints. You know when to push for quality and when to ship.
  • Directed AI-Assisted Development: You understand how AI coding tools work as a productivity multiplier and can guide your team's adoption while maintaining quality and independent technical judgment.
Strongly Preferred
  • Experience with Elixir or another functional, concurrency-oriented language (Erlang, Scala, Clojure).
  • Experience managing multiple engineering teams within a larger platform organization.
  • Background in warehouse management, logistics, or another real-time operational system.
Nice to Have
  • Direct production experience with Elixir/OTP at scale.
  • Experience managing teams building meaningful enhancements into an existing, live system rather than greenfield work.
  • Familiarity with warehouse operations concepts (picking, packing, inventory, labor allocation).

What Success Looks Like
  • 30 days: You've built working relationships with both of your teams, understand the current state of ongoing platform work, and have a clear read on near-term delivery risk.

  • 90 days: Both teams are delivering on a predictable cadence, and you've established clear priorities and ownership within your scope.

  • 6 months: Your teams have shipped measurable progress on their platform roadmap, and you're recognized as a reliable, steady hand within WMS engineering leadership.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
