Job Description SummaryAs the Engineering Manager – Mechanical Component Design in our Defense & Systems Mechanical Sciences organization, you will lead a team responsible for the design and development of turbomachinery mechanical components across all Defense & Systems programs.
You will combine hands-on technical leadership with people management, guiding a group of experienced engineers as they execute critical design, analysis, and evaluation work that directly impacts safety, performance, and mission readiness for our customers.
This role is ideal for an experienced mechanical design engineer who enjoys solving complex engineering problems, developing talent, and shaping product and component strategy in a mission-driven, defense-oriented environment.

Job Description

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead engineering design execution for a subset of turbomachinery mechanical components across multiple Defense & Systems programs, including design improvements and new solutions.
  • Execute and review design, analysis, and evaluation work using sound engineering principles while adhering to business standards, procedures, and product/program requirements.
  • Provide technical direction and mentoring to an engineering team with 8+ direct reports, fostering a culture of technical rigor, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Influence strategy for your area of responsibility, including resource planning and input to policy and process improvements.
  • Stay current on industry trends in turbomachinery and mechanical component design and translate those into practical improvements in products, processes, and tools.
  • Use strong engineering judgment to make decisions on complex technical and operational topics spanning product management, manufacturing, technology, and engineering.
  • Lead or contribute to cross-functional projects with moderate complexity, clearly communicating difficult concepts and helping stakeholders align on technical options and trade-offs.

What Makes This Role Attractive:

  • Impactful work: Your team’s designs will directly influence the performance and reliability of Defense & Systems turbomachinery components used in critical missions.
  • Technical depth: Opportunity to apply and expand your expertise in turbomachinery component engineering design while remaining close to the technical details.
  • Leadership scope: Lead and grow a small-to-medium team of senior professionals, shape team strategy, and develop the next generation of mechanical design talent.
  • Autonomy with support: Operate with moderate autonomy within established policy objectives, using a high level of judgment while partnering with experienced leaders across engineering, manufacturing, and program teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited university or college.
  • At least 8 years of engineering experience, ideally including substantial mechanical design work.
  • This role requires the successful candidate to obtain and maintain US Government Security Clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. citizenship.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in engineering from an accredited university or college.
  • Expertise in turbomachinery components engineering design.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with demonstrated experience coaching, mentoring, or leading engineers.
  • Proven ability to analyze and resolve complex technical problems and drive design decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead programs and projects, including cross-functional coordination.
  • Ability to document, plan, advocate for, and execute engineering programs and improvement initiatives.
  • Established project management skills in a technical environment.

The base pay range for this position is 150,000 - 200,000. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.
