Articulate is looking for an Engineering Manager to join our growing AI Team! As an engineering manager, you’ll lead a team of 4-6 engineers who turn state-of-the-art AI technology into product features that supercharge creators to build engaging learning experiences. Comfort with management practices and strong project management skills are keys in this role. As a leader, you’ll be accountable for the team shipping reliable, scalable, AI-powered functionality.

You may spend less time writing code but there is an expectation to still engage in technical work such as feature development, bug fixes and maintenance, focusing on the productivity of your team over your own output. More than writing code, you’ll hold responsibility for identifying bottlenecks in the process and unblocking these roadblocks to ensure team success.

What You'll Do:

  • Roadmap ambiguous opportunities into a clear, value-driven backlog; partner with Product and Design leads to define and deliver on goals.
  • Lead by example by contributing to critical PRs, prototypes, and production debugging. Uphold high design and review standards.
  • Coach, hire and retain a high-performing, diverse engineering team. Run weekly 1:1’s and foster career growth.
  • Collaborate with peer EMs to evolve our engineering tooling, hiring bar, and cross-team best practices.
  • Deliver compelling products, features and services while providing transparent updates, timeline estimates, and demos along the way.
  • Optimize processes and remove impediments to sustain velocity, quality, and reliability.
  • Support partner teams in triaging and resolving production issues, including participating in on-call rotation.

What You Should Have:

  • Demonstrated success designing, integrating, and scaling LLM-backed features such as chat assistants, content generation, semantic search, or agentic workflows.
  • Hands-on experience with TypeScript, React, and Node.js in the context of delivering scalable, user-facing applications.
  • 3+ years of engineering management experience leading high-functioning teams, with clear examples of how you supported productivity and team health.
  • Strong computer science fundamentals applied at scale, backed by a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field—or equivalent practical experience such as training or fellowships.
  • Excellent communication skills, translating complex technical concepts to cross-functional partners and leading difficult conversations constructively.
  • Contagious enthusiasm for AI's potential to empower users, not just today, but in shaping the future of tools that help instructional designers and learning teams create impactful training and development content

Nice to Haves:

  • Proficiency in a related field such as Applied AI, Machine Learning, Data Engineering, Data Science, or Applied Mathematics.
  • Experience working with AI libraries and frameworks such as Vercel's AI SDK, LangChain, or similar tools that facilitate building LLM-powered applications.
  • Experience leading software projects that ensure reliability in non-deterministic systems while addressing bias mitigation and upholding transparency, fairness, and ethical AI standards.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
