More about our mission and what we offer.

Job Description

We are looking for an Engineering Lead with a passion for solving problems at scale.

Continuous Delivery is key to delivering features to our customers as quickly as possible whilst minimising the risk of change-related incidents. The team is responsible for designing, building and running a comprehensive CD platform for the entire engineering organisation.

We believe CD is essential in supporting Wise’s Mission by proactively preventing incidents and safely delivering service- and system-level changes. We want to be opinionated and incorporate SRE and CD industry-wide best practices by default. If you enjoy thinking about problems at scale, using data and metrics to drive technical investments, this is the role for you.

How we work

We operate on a strong belief in automation, programmatic implementation, and reusable design. We’re looking for people who can step back and think holistically about the ecosystem, but also follow through and help implement the design; drawing on the resources across the rest of the platform tribe.

As we grow, so does our need to deploy software with maximum confidence and minimum effort. We need to sustain this growth by continuously iterating on the services we run, with a focus on availability, security, and ease of use. We’re looking for an engineer with relevant experience who can analyse complex requirements and deliver simple solutions to help our teams achieve our mission with speed and confidence.

What will you be working on?

As a Team Lead, you'll be expected to give your team members a high level of autonomy while assisting and mentoring them in a number of areas:

  • Team health: You’ll be responsible for the overall health and productivity of your team. You’ll help with setting the culture, and identifying and implementing the right approaches for working.

  • Architecture: When the team is making technical decisions you’ll provide feedback on architecture and approach, and help them make smart decisions about managing tech debt while delivering new features.

  • Strategy & Roadmap: You’ll work with the team to identify capabilities most beneficial to engineering teams, ensuring they are designed and implemented with the goals of increased automation and safety at scale.

  • Collaboration & Alignment: You’ll partner with other teams across the Platform Engineering tribe to align on goals and timelines for delivery of capabilities that span multiple teams and squads, including Data, Cloud Platform and Reliability.

  • Technical contribution: Working with your team and solving organisation-level challenges will consume most of your time. But at times you’ll jump in and help your team get a project over the line, or help them solve thorny technical challenges.

Qualifications

  • Experience leading high functioning teams with an understanding of how to optimise performance and productivity.

  • Hands-on Java Software Engineer - you will be building the platform and applying best SDLC practices (development, testing, applications, monitoring).

  • Experience with CI/CD systems, preferably Spinnaker, or others such as GitHub Actions, ArgoCD or Concourse.

  • Experience of cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, GCP) both in utilising services and how cloud infrastructure works.

  • Experience with containerisation technology and orchestration platforms e.g. Docker, Kubernetes.

  • Knowledge of architectural concepts such as microservices, service mesh.

  • Experience in scaling, building and testing with automation; e.g. including tooling in pipelines instead of manual operational changes.

  • Growth mindset and a desire to learn, teach, and improve skills.

Nice to Have

  • Scripting skills – in either Python/Bash/Go, especially building tools and CLIs.

  • Promoter of and able to implement SRE and DevSecOps practices. Understand the differences between SLI, SLO and SLAs and how to measure each.

  • Good knowledge of observability stacks and tooling (e.g. Grafana, ELK, Prometheus, Tracing).

  • Good discipline and skill in producing written documentation and diagrams.

  • Good knowledge of cloud networking and security.

  • Experience working in a regulated business (e.g. PCI).

  • Experience of capacity planning as well as performance and load testing.

Additional Information

You get back:

  • The ability to choose your own path to success – you’ll have the freedom to define the vision.

  • The opportunity to gain visibility in the open source community.

  • The freedom to have real impact.

  • The opportunity to inspire teams.

  • A fun work environment with social activities and events

  • Flexible working – whether it’s working from home, school plays or life admin we get that flexibility is essential and you’re trusted to do the right thing and be responsible

  • Paid annual holiday, sick days, parental leave and other leave opportunities

  • 6 weeks of paid sabbatical after 4 years at Wise on top of annual leave

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
