JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: First Shift Manufacturing Test Development Engineer III
Location: Beverly, MA (Onsite)
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Build the Future of Semiconductor Technology

Axcelis is a global leader in ion implantation and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. For more than four decades, we’ve partnered with the world’s top chipmakers to drive breakthroughs that power smartphones, electric vehicles, AI systems, and advanced computing technologies.

As a Manufacturing Test Development Engineer II, you won’t just support our technology; you’ll help shape it. You will contribute directly to the design, development, and continuous improvement of the test systems that ensure every Axcelis product meets the highest standards of quality, reliability, and performance.

This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer to expand their experience, work with cross‑functional technical teams, and develop practical engineering skills that drive real-world impact.

About the Role

In this role, you will design, implement, validate, and sustain electrical and mechanical test solutions used in Axcelis manufacturing operations globally. You’ll collaborate closely with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to support new product introduction, optimize test coverage, and improve overall manufacturing efficiency.

Your work will directly influence product reliability, production cycle time, and throughput—key factors driving the performance of our global organization.

This position provides exposure to a wide range of engineering disciplines, including electronics, mechanical design, automation, instrumentation, data analysis, and troubleshooting of complex test systems.

What You’ll Do

  • Own test systems from concept through production use, including development, deployment, and sustaining support in a manufacturing environment
  • Design and validate electrical and mechanical manufacturing test solutions, including automated test equipment, custom fixtures, and tooling
  • Execute fabrication and implementation of custom test hardware, utilizing additive and subtractive manufacturing methods, custom PCBs, NI DAQ systems, and off-the-shelf components
  • Perform hands-on debugging of equipment and systems, including test equipment, data acquisition devices, test software, sensors, intersystem communication, PCBAs, motion controllers, and robotics
  • Analyze test data to identify failure modes, root causes, process variations, and opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including Manufacturing, Design Engineering, Quality, and Process Engineering—to define test requirements and ensure alignment with product needs
  • Create, update, and maintain detailed test documentation, procedures, calibration instructions, and engineering reports
  • Support new product introduction (NPI) by developing test strategies and equipment for emerging technologies
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to increase test throughput, enhance repeatability, reduce downtime, and improve equipment reliability

What We’re Looking For

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 2–4 years of engineering experience
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment is a plus

Technical Skills:

  • Familiarity with CAD modeling software such as SolidWorks, Creo, or AutoCAD
  • Understanding of electrical schematics and PCB design tools (Altium, KiCad, or similar)
  • Experience using basic measurement tools and lab equipment, including DMMs, oscilloscopes, DAQs, and signal analyzers
  • Familiarity with National Instruments product line including NI LabVIEW, NI TestStand, cDAQ, and PXIe
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across electrical, electronic, mechanical, and system-level issues, with the ability to diagnose problems where root cause may span multiple disciplines (e.g., electrically controlled mechanical systems)
  • Exposure to vacuum systems, RF, motion control, and/or high voltage systems
  • Ability to use fabrication tools (hand tools, calipers, 3D printing, basic machining)
  • Competency with data analysis techniques and tools such as Excel, Minitab, MATLAB, or similar
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Gantt charts, Microsoft Project, or Planner

Soft Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities
  • Ability to collaborate effectively on cross-functional engineering teams
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
