Editor, Politics, Policy, and Ideas (Temporary)

We’re seeking a Temporary Editor who can help with editing our Politics, Policy, and Ideas team for four months. This full-time position will work under the Editorial Director for Policy, Politics, and Ideas. The ideal candidate is a confident editor who can talk through ideas with writers, elevate their drafts, and triage priorities. They will work closely with the Editorial Director and other newsroom editors to determine coverage priorities, multiplatform opportunities, and engagement strategies. 

The ideal candidate is someone with experience assigning and editing news, analysis, and feature stories for a daily digital news site. The editor can nimbly jump from task to task and topic to topic, and will work closely with the Editorial Director of Politics, Policy, and Ideas and Executive Editor to make sure we’re assigning the right stories, and editing them to be as sharp and distinctive as possible. 

Instead of covering the daily back-and-forth on a bill in Congress, we want an editor to assign pieces that zoom out to the underlying problem, or offer a crisp perspective on what the fight says about the state of the American political system. We want distinctive angles on the day's news, something that adds value to what's already being reported in dozens of other outlets – in other words, we want someone to help get Vox-y pieces up on our site. 

This editor should be comfortable working with different formats and thinking creatively about the best way to approach major events and conversations, while guiding writers to do entrepreneurial intellectual work to find the emerging ideas that will shape those events tomorrow.

• Conceptualize, assign, and edit pieces rooted in reporting and research, including explainers, argument-driven essays, and features
• Work with editors across the Vox newsroom to find opportunities to elevate writers’ work on other platforms, including audio, video, and social video
• Stay on top of the news, both foreign and domestic, to find the angles that will lead to truly distinctive analytical, contextual, and deeply informed journalism
• Collaborate with the Editorial Director and other editors to set daily coverage priorities for Politics-Policy-Ideas

• 3-5 years experience as an editor and manager
• Strong editing and communication skills
• Excellent editorial judgment
• Concise and clever headline writing skills
• A strong understanding of Vox’s editorial strategy and an ability to make sure our written work aligns with our strategy
• Analytical rigor. We want an editor with an ability to pressure-test our own writers’ arguments and steelman opposing ones. We want an editor who can confidently edit pieces that explain ideas and/or stake out intellectual claims, and who is eager to assign and edit pieces that embrace nuance and complicate narratives without sacrificing clarity. 
• A good motor – an ability to jump nimbly from editing same-day turnaround stories to “Day 2” analyses that might be heavier lifts
• Interest in and/or familiarity with a wide range of topics, from domestic politics and culture to international conflicts and global issues – and everything in between!
