Position Summary

As the Director of Student and Bar Success, this position will create both academic and bar success plans. The Director will work with students throughout their time at JFK, both individually and via workshops, focusing on developing the skills essential to succeed in law school (e.g.: IRAC, rule synthesis, exam skills, time management skills, etc.). In close collaboration with law school administration, this position will develop a Bar Success Program, which spans from the first day as JD students through graduation and then later as alumni. The program will focus on preparing students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to successfully pass the CA bar exam. The Director of Student and Bar Success will lead the collection and analysis of student data to guide student and bar success initiatives. 

The position also requires teaching a minimum of one (1) JD course per semester each academic year. As faculty, the primary responsibility is to engage and mentor students to be successful in the JD program and ultimately the Bar Exam. This leadership position works in collaboration and closely with the law school faculty and administration.

Essential Functions:

  • Build, launch, and manage a student success program which incorporates activities, resources, and personalized feedback.
  • Collect and analyze data to inform programmatic and bar plan modifications.
  • Mentor JD students by providing individualized academic advice and bar success coaching
  • Informed by data, develop and offer student sessions and workshops essential for student JD exam and bar success.
  • Manage and maintain relationships with key external vendors such as Barbri.
  • Work with faculty to integrate bar exam preparation into their classroom teaching.
  • Teach JD courses as required.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Juris Doctor degree from a regionally or ABA accredited institution required.
  • Experience in legal doctrine and practice, as well as in teaching legal courses required.
  • Experience and familiarity with the CA Bar Exam, the requirements of the California Committee of Bar Examiners and familiarity with the upcoming changes to the CA Bar Exam required.
  • Experience teaching JD success skills including IRAC, rule synthesis, MBE skills, study skills and time management skills required.
  • Proficiency in acquisition of student success data and application to classroom learning and bar preparation required. 
  • Experience with the online delivery of education and the systems that support it preferred.
  • Proficiency in the use of technology in the delivery of education preferred.
  • All skills, abilities and education will be considered for minimum qualifications preferred.

  • Intermediate use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite Applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook.  Experience using Student Information System (SIS) such as SOAR/Peoplesoft systems. 
  • Skill in operating equipment, such as personal computers, fax, copier, phone systems. 
  • Ability to handle a diversity of details in order to make informed and responsive decisions on matters that impact, and students. 
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governing body regulations. 
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. 
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. 
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. 
  • Experience with the online delivery of education and the systems that support it. 
  • Willingness to participate in trial use of new technologies and integrate new technologies into teaching. 
  • Excellent communication skills: verbal and written. 
  • Skill in using or eagerness to learn to use multiple technologies to teach and communicate with students (learning management systems, Skype, etc.).

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies.  Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position. The minimum salary will be offered based on the minimum exemption threshold based on state of residency.
