Role Overview

The Director of Software Development provides strategic and operational leadership across multiple engineering teams responsible for building and supporting systems that collect, transform, analyze, and report on healthcare data. This role leads Development Managers and senior engineers, drives technical direction, ensures reliable delivery, and represents the technology organization in internal and client-facing conversations. The ideal candidate combines strong engineering leadership, practical technical acumen, experience with healthcare data, and the ability to communicate clearly with executives, customers, and cross-functional partners.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership, People Management & Organizational Management

 Lead and develop multiple Development Managers and their teams, building a high-performing organization with clear expectations, accountability, and professional growth paths.
 Develop leaders through coaching, mentorship, and constructive feedback to strengthen organizational capability.
 Recruit, retain, and develop top engineering talent across distributed teams.
 Coach and grow engineers through mentorship, skill development, and clear performance expectations.
 Foster an inclusive engineering culture that promotes psychological safety, open communication, and shared ownership.
 Communicate expectations, priorities, and change with clarity to ensure alignment across distributed teams.
 Navigate ambiguity effectively and provide steady leadership during periods of organizational or technical change.
 Partner with Product, QA, DevOps, Platform Engineering, and Security to align priorities and drive end-to-end delivery.
 Promote effective cross-team collaboration to ensure consistent execution across locations and functional boundaries.
 Manage engineering labor budget for your area and projects, tracking spend month to month.
 Work a flexible schedule to collaborate effectively with the global team.
 Navigate vendor relationships and procurement processes as prescribed by the company.

Technical Strategy, Architecture & Execution

 Provide technical oversight for systems spanning data ingestion, transformation pipelines, analytical processing, APIs, and user-facing applications.
 Partner with architects to ensure solutions are scalable, secure, high-performing, and cost-effective.
 Drive modernization initiatives that improve platform reliability, development efficiency, and long-term maintainability.
 Identify, plan, and execute strategies to reduce technical debt and decay, with an eyetowards aligning improvements with business value (e.g., performance improvements to increase market penetration and drive usage, SSO to enhance interoperability, and security improvements to strengthen RFP competitiveness).
 Partner with software architecture to oversee and approve technical designs and non-functional requirements.
 Establish, uphold and continuously improve engineering best practices, including design reviews, coding standards, documentation quality, and technical decision-making rigor.

Operational Excellence & Delivery Management

 Monitor and improve operational metrics related to system stability, performance, quality, and delivery throughput.
 Ensure incidents are resolved effectively and followed by strong root cause analysis and durable corrective actions.
 Maintain disciplined SDLC practices across teams, including CI/CD, test automation, observability, and environment management.
 Lead capacity planning, staffing, and budget alignment to support predictable roadmap delivery.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

 Represent Engineering in client, prospect, and partner discussions to articulate technical capabilities and roadmap direction.
 Support sales and delivery activities through RFP contributions, solution discussions, and technical demonstrations.
 Communicate complex technical concepts in clear, business-focused language tailored to executive and non-technical audiences.
 Partner with Customer Success and Support teams to address escalations and ensure a strong client experience.

Healthcare Data & Domain Leadership

 Apply practical understanding of how healthcare data is used across payer, provider, and employer analytics workflows.
 Guide engineering teams in delivering data-driven capabilities that support population health, cost/utilization analysis, and other analytics use cases.
 Ensure compliance with privacy, security, and regulatory requirements such as HIPAA when handling healthcare data.

Required Qualifications

 10+ years of software development experience, including 4+ years leading managers or multi-team engineering organizations.
 Proven success delivering large-scale, data-intensive applications in distributed or cloud-based environments.
 Strong technical understanding of modern architectures, APIs, data pipelines, and analytics systems.
 Demonstrated ability to collaborate across engineering, product, and business teams to execute multi-release roadmaps.
 Exceptional communication skills with the ability to tailor messaging to executives, clients, and technical audiences.
 Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including conflict resolution, influencing without authority, and building trust across teams.
 Experience with healthcare data concepts (claims, eligibility, clinical, analytics) preferred but not required.

Preferred Qualifications

 Experience leading modernization efforts such as cloud migration, platform re-architecture, or legacy system transformation.
 Background in enterprise-scale SaaS or distributed system environments.
 Familiarity with data governance, compliance frameworks, and secure engineering practices.
 Ability to shape long-term technical strategy and architectural direction across multiple teams.
 Experience supporting organizations through scaling, restructuring, or operational transformation.
 Positive mindset and exceptional non-linear thinking as applied to problem solving.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field required.
Master’s degree in a technical or analytics discipline preferred.

Travel

Limited travel may be required for team collaboration, client meetings, or project support.

To enhance collaboration and team leadership, a significant presence (2 to 4 days per week) in the Merative office is preferred (based on candidate location).

Compensation

The salary range provided in this job posting is intended to reflect the general market value for the position. The actual salary offered may vary based on factors such as the candidate’s experience, qualifications, skills, and the specific requirements of the role. This range may also be subject to change as market conditions evolve. We encourage open communication throughout the interview process to discuss compensation expectations. For base-salary + commission sales roles, the range represents On-Target Earnings.

Min – Max :

$204,857.94 - $307,286.90 (USD)
