About Us

Valo Health is a technology company that is integrating human-centric data and AI-powered technology to accelerate the creation of life-changing drugs for more patients faster. Valo was created with the belief that the drug discovery and development process can and should be faster and less expensive, with a much higher probability of success. We are using models early to fail less often, executing clinical trials to add valuation to the company, and generating fit-for-purpose data to feed back into Valo’s Opal Computational Platform™ as we reinvent drug discovery and development from the ground up. Disease doesn’t wait, so neither can we.

We are a multi-disciplinary team of experts in science, technology, and pharmaceuticals united in our mission to achieve better drugs for patients faster. Valo is committed to hiring diverse talent, prioritizing growth and development, fostering an inclusive environment, and creating opportunities to bring together a group of different experiences, backgrounds, and voices to work together. We achieve the widest-ranging impact when we leverage our broad backgrounds and perspectives to accelerate a new frontier in health. Valo seeks to become the catalyst for the pharmaceutical industry and drive the digital transformation of the industry. Are you ready to join us?

About The Role

Valo is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to lead our efforts for our computational platform for drug discovery. You will manage a cross-functional team of data and software engineers, enhancing our state-of-the-art computational chemistry system. Your work will support both our external partnership and internal drug programs. In addition, you will be working closely with our Machine Learning, Data Science, and Medicinal Chemistry teams to accelerate the process of discovering new drug candidates.

What You’ll Do…

  • Manage, mentor, and grow an engineering team of 4-6 between our San Francisco and Boston offices.
  • Lead the evolution of Valo’s data science platform, ensuring it is robust, scalable and meets the high-performance demands of our data scientists, all while upholding data governance standards.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration across our data science, machine learning, lab informatics, and medicinal chemistry teams to advance our computational infrastructure for our drug discovery and development mission.
  • Foster processes and technology to boost operational scalability, enabling our teams to rapidly expand capacity without expanding headcount.

What You Bring...

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering and leadership
  • 4+ years of management experience managing cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in creating an effective and inclusive team culture.
  • Experience building data science platforms: data and feature engineering pipelines, model life-cycle support, data governance.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with and influence business and technical teams
  • A strong understanding of AWS technologies for Cloud native applications and services
  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or a similar technical field, or equivalent experience

You May Also Bring...

  • A background in drug development or another healthcare or biotechnology field
  • Experience with data science and workflow orchestration platforms such as Domino, Kubeflow, Prefect, Ray, Spark
  • Experience with AWS infrastructure and MLOps services such as EKS and SageMaker

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
