The Role:

As our Director, Legal Counsel, you will play a pivotal role within an established and high-impact legal department. Reporting directly to the General Counsel, you will serve as a key strategic partner across the organization, managing a robust portfolio of commercial, corporate, product, and data privacy matters. This is a high-visibility backfill designed for a practitioner who wants to step in and drive immediate value for a fast-growing, venture-backed SaaS leader.

This role is best suited for someone who is gritty, yet meticulous; independent, yet collaborative — and who enjoys partnering closely with Sales and GTM teams to provide practical, business-oriented legal guidance. You’re able to translate legalese into actionable advice for cross-functional stakeholders and are excited by the opportunity to support a scaling SaaS company operating in the FinTech and AIecosystem.

You bring strong business judgment, a pragmatic approach to problem-solving, and a solutions-oriented mindset in fast-paced, evolving environments. Familiarity with data privacy considerations in modern SaaS products is important, and an interest in responsibly leveraging emerging technologies such as AI within legal workflows is a plus.

What You’ll Do:

  • Be the point person for our global sales team, acting as a strategic business partner to lead the negotiation process to close deals.

  • Draft and negotiate agreements throughout the Company, including strategic partnerships, sales, vendor, marketing, NDA’s, and other commercial agreements.

  • Align with R&D teams on the company’s data collection, storage, use, and related privacy matters, and how it translates into our privacy policies and templates.

  • Support cross-functional teams in evaluating privacy, data security, and emerging AI-related considerations in customer and partner agreements.

  • Partner with the General Counsel on the optimization and further creation of Companywide commercial templates and processes to ensure the Legal Department is set up for scale (i.e., sales trainings, creation of a playbook, templates, and other collateral

  • Stay on top of the latest developments in laws, regulations, and industry trends applicable to venture-backed software companies, including federal, state, and international data privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA, etc.)

What You’ll Bring:

  • You should have 5-8 years of transactional experience, ideally with an in-house, SaaS and/or financial services background.

  • You should have significant experience drafting and negotiating SaaS agreements and similar complex services and partnership agreements, including related privacy and data security provisions. Experience negotiating SaaS MSA’s and the data governance, security, and compliance issues that routinely arise in those agreements is strongly preferred.

  • Familiarity with modern data governance frameworks — and interest in how AI-enabled products may introduce new privacy and contractual considerations — is a plus.

  • As Director, Legal Counsel, you will report to the General Counsel and will be tasked with deeply understanding and influencing sales negotiations and processes. You will need strong attention to detail and should be an efficient problem solver who is excited to work in a fast-paced tech scale-up.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
