Description
US Retail Markets (USRM) Technology is seeking a strategic and visionary engineering leader to serve as Engineering Director for our Solaria Labs USRM Incubation Engineering team. In this role, you'll lead a high-performing team within the USRM Innovation Enablement organization, focused on accelerating the delivery of innovative, tech-forward solutions. You'll shape and drive the engineering strategy behind incubation initiatives that explore and apply emerging technologies such as GenAI, while leveraging modern engineering platforms and experimentation frameworks to accelerate learning and unlock new business value. This role partners closely with Solaria Labs, Liberty's enterprise incubator known for bold experimentation, applied science, and rapid in-market testing to uncover scalable opportunities. This collaboration fuels prototyping, platform development, and the launch of innovative solutions that contribute to Liberty's broader innovation ecosystem.
As Engineering Director, you will be responsible for building, developing, and empowering a high-performing engineering team that delivers innovative, scalable solutions. You will lead both people leaders and senior technical leaders, overseeing talent development and resource alignment to ensure the team is positioned to meet evolving business priorities. As a senior leader, you will also contribute to broader organizational planning and serve as a thought leader who advances the craft of engineering across USRM and Liberty Mutual.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and develop a high-performing engineering organization, including both people leaders and senior technical leaders.
- Shape and drive the engineering strategy for incubation efforts, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture standards, modern engineering practices, and long-term technology direction.
- Partner closely with Solaria Labs and cross-functional stakeholders in product, design, and applied science to co-develop and launch experimental solutions that accelerate learning and unlock business value.
- Foster a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and experimentation, while ensuring high standards for code quality, system reliability, and operational efficiency.
- Oversee talent development, performance management, and succession planning across the team, including hiring, coaching, and mentoring of engineering managers and senior technical leaders.
- Influence enterprise technology strategy by contributing to architectural decisions, platform investments, and the adoption of emerging technologies such as GenAI, while leveraging and building cloud-native platforms.
- Collaborate with senior and executive leaders across Solaria Labs, USRM, and Liberty Mutual to align engineering priorities with business goals, manage interdependencies, and support broader organizational planning.
- Represent the team in strategic planning, budgeting, and resource allocation discussions, ensuring effective deployment of engineering capacity across initiatives.
- Serve as a thought leader and visible champion for innovation and engineering craft within USRM and across Liberty Mutual's broader technology community.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in technical or business discipline or related experience; Master's Degree preferred.
- Generally, more than 10 years related experience with 5 years in leadership role.
- In-depth knowledge of IT concepts, strategies and methodologies and their application to business opportunities. In-depth knowledge of business operations, objectives and strategies.
- In-depth knowledge of project planning methodologies and tools and IT standards and guidelines.
- Advanced knowledge of management concepts, practices and techniques. Ability to promote a team environment consisting of several teams.
- Highly developed negotiation, facilitation and consensus building skills.
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills; strong presentation skills.

The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
