Director, Content & Brand Strategy

Location: Remote (US)  ·  Type: Full-time  ·  Reports to: CCO

The Role

We're hiring a Director, Content & Brand Strategy to lead Destructoid's transition from a website-centric publisher into a multi-platform brand. This is the top content role at Destructoid: you'll own everything from editorial vision and standards through how the brand shows up across social video, multimedia, community, and owned channels.

You'll keep the editorial core lean, productive, and trusted while building the video, social, community, and commercial franchises around it. This is a role for an entrepreneur, someone who thinks in platforms and formats, is comfortable owning editorial integrity and a P&L, and knows how to build content brand loyalty beyond a website.

What You'll OwnBrand strategy & identity
  • Sharpen Destructoid's point of view, voice, and visual identity so the brand travels natively beyond articles — into video, community, and events.
  • Steward the brand consistently across every platform and format.
Social-first video & multimedia
  • Own the strategy to turn Destructoid's video heritage into repeatable, IP-able franchises built for TikTok, Reels, Shorts, and YouTube — vertical- and platform-native, not articles rebuilt as slideshows.
  • Develop content formats that build loyalty and portable IP.
  • Set the multimedia roadmap across video, live, and emerging formats.
Audience & community growth
  • Grow owned, algorithm-independent channels — the Checkpoint newsletter, community, Discord — as a first-party audience you control.
Revenue diversification
  • Partner with the commercial/sales team to grow non-advertising revenue: branded content, sponsorships, commerce and affiliate, events/tentpoles, and direct reader revenue — including testing whether subscription or membership can work on top of the newsletter and site.
  • Turn brand and franchises into sellable, differentiated offerings for partners.
Editorial leadership
  • Work with editorial team to set editorial vision, voice, and standards.
  • Protect editorial integrity and independence.
  • Keep the news and reviews core lean, credible, and at its margin target.
Operating model & P&L
  • Own the content-and-brand contribution to the P&L, and resource new growth additively rather than by cannibalizing editorial.
  • Establish shared KPIs across editorial, audience, and commercial so every team pulls in the same direction.
In Your First 6–12 Months
  • A clear, documented brand and content strategy with defined franchises and platform priorities.
  • At least one or two social-first video/multimedia franchises launched and measurably growing.
  • Meaningful growth in owned audience (newsletter, community) and a working, repeatable approach.
  • A diversified revenue plan underway, with early signals in at least one non-advertising line.
  • A healthy, sustainable editorial core operating at its margin target.
What You Bring
  • 7+ years in digital media, content, or brand — ideally publisher- or media-side (not solely B2B/marketing content).
  • A track record building social-first video and multimedia franchises and growing audiences across platforms.
  • Commercial fluency: hands-on experience with branded content, commerce/affiliate, events, subscriptions, or memberships as real revenue lines.
  • Comfort owning a budget and outcomes; you think like a GM, not just as a content strategist.
  • The ability to move fluidly between high-level strategy and day-to-day execution.
  • Fluency in gaming and enthusiast culture, and how it behaves on social.
  • Data literacy — you set KPIs and use them to steer.
Bonus Points
  • A passion for gaming.
  • A network in the gaming/creator industry.
  • Experience with community platforms (Discord, forums) and newsletter monetization.
  • A history of modernizing a legacy brand into contemporary, ownable IP.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
