Join Nuance Communications, the leader in speech and language recognition, in this role you'll be trained as a Speech Scientist for our omnichannel bots (IVR, chat, web) and Voice Biometrics systems. Our technology handles millions of automated channel conversations each year, leveraging cutting-edge technologies including speech recognition, voice biometrics and natural language understanding.
In this role you will be responsible for the planning and delivery of Speech Science tasks within a project for clients - our customers are mostly household names and are in industries ranging from banking, telecoms and government bodies to TV.
You'll work closely with our Design and Technical teams to deliver truly excellent solutions, and continue to develop professionally through becoming an active part of Nuance's Speech Science community across the region and globally.
This position will support government contracts and will require the ability to gain security clearance as needed. Eligibility for clearance requires US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status.
Education: Bachelor's degree preferred: Computer Science, Machine Learning, Cognitive Science, Computational Linguistics, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field, and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.
Required Skills & experience:

  • Passionate about managing and analyzing large volumes of data to solve problems and improve system performance
  • Excited about working with customers - both internal and external - to optimize systems for their unique requirements
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a project team
  • Strong customer-facing skills and an ability to communicate complex concepts to a business / non-technical audience
  • Good programming skills in Python are needed and Perl is also very useful
  • Comfortable with command-line interfaces and shell scripting
  • Highly independent and capable of fulfilling multiple project commitments concurrently
  • Ability to scope work taking technical, business and time-frame constraints into consideration
  • Motivated to learn and acquire new technical skills
  • Dynamic personality and flexible attitude


Preferred Skills:

  • Coursework or previous work experience in human computer interaction, usability studies, or statistics
  • Programming skills in Python, Perl, ECMAScript/JavaScript, optionally in Java, R, .NET, C/C++, SQL
  • Experience with: JSON, XML, VoiceXML, Jira and Confluence
  • Proficiency with MS Office, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with audio processing software, such as audacity, sox or wavesurfer
  • A background in Data Science and statistical analysis
  • Speech recognition knowledge, signal processing, linguistics, natural language understanding (NLU), text classification, text mining, or other machine learning algorithms
  • Knowledge of or experience with Voice Biometric systems
  • Familiarity with Virtual Agents (chat bots), ASR platforms and APIs
  • Ability to speak a second language such as Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian or French is a definite plus
