Who you are
You are a leader with the vision to build an incredible data science team and culture, and the ability to
propel ongoing business value for Drizly with data science solutions. You are deeply familiar with the
rapidly changing data science ecosystem, adamant about what a best-in-class tech stack looks like, and
capable of sourcing, evaluating, and implementing modern data infrastructure. You have an innate
curiosity around analytics that is contagious within your team and throughout your company.
You have seen how businesses can thrive with a strong data science team. You can source, evaluate,
execute, and communicate the state of a DS project, and you know how to prioritize work accordingly.
You are technical enough to know how difficult a 10%, 1%, or 0.1% improvement to a model may be,
and have the business acumen to translate that context back to Drizly’s underlying goals and strategy.
You have a bias towards action, quick iterations, and simplicity; and the perspective to know which
problems matter.
From a leadership perspective - you manage growth vs. execution, communicate well across the
technical spectrum, and know when to advocate for software engineering standards vs. when to move
quickly. You know how hard it is to take something that works in a Jupyter Notebook and deploy it live
on site. Most importantly, you lead and grow the careers of data scientists, and know how to build
teams and processes that scale.
You have a proven track record of success, and 2+ years of experience managing data science
contributors and platforms. We’d be really impressed if you have implemented event streaming solutions or built platforms to develop and deploy data science services. We’d also be impressed if you
have experience with multi-sided marketplaces or hyperlocal business models.
What the role is
We are looking for someone to build and lead the future of data science at Drizly. They will be
responsible for managing and accelerating the careers of the current team, while also recruiting and
hiring candidates that raise the standard. This role will be responsible for resource allocation within
the data science org, and will prioritize projects and hiring needs in collaboration with senior
The Director of Data Science will own the development of a best-in-class modern data science
platform, and be responsible for sourcing, evaluating, and implementing data science tools and
processes across Drizly’s tech stack. This platform will be built in collaboration with DevOps and
product engineering to support the future of data science projects and services at Drizly.
The Director of Data Science is a critical member of the Analytics organization, and will work closely
with Data Engineering and BI. They will certainly be responsible for supporting individual DS models
and solutions, but also for the larger vision of how a data science architecture, codebase, and best
practices should grow with Drizly over time.
Most importantly - the Director of Data Science will execute on a long and aspirational roadmap of
topics to make Drizly a thoroughly data-oriented company. This role will own efforts on
personalization for Drizly consumers, batching and routing for Drizly retailers, and forecasting and
inventory optimization for alcohol manufacturers. Internally, this could mean propensity and LTV
modeling for marketing, or unlocking efficiency for Drizly’s own operations. This person must not
just be capable of building data science products, but also capable of developing a data-centric
company culture.

In this role you will:

  • Architect the development of a best-in-class modern data science platform: sourcing, evaluating, and implementing data science tools and processes across Drizly’s tech stack
  • Accelerate the work and careers of our existing data science team, while building for the future of data science at Drizly
  • Drive incremental and compounding business value to Drizly with data science products, analysis, and solutions
  • Work cross-functionally with Drizly’s data engineering, product engineering, DevOps, and product teams to develop, deploy, and monitor data science models in production
  • Maintain and improve the data infrastructure, documentation, codebase, internal processes, and standards of the Analytics Team
  • Develop and execute improvements through a complete lifecycle of experimental design, testing, measurement, and implementation

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

I work closely with the product and engineering teams on a daily basis to design features for the people who use our products. I often loop in other teams to get their expertise on our users and different parts of the business. Everyone is constantly striving to make improvements and I get great ideas from people on every team at Drizly.

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

I identified a need for deeper knowledge of alcohol when I joined Drizly’s Customer Experience team 2 years ago. With the support & encouragement of my team, I became our first Certified Cicerone® taking a new role in Category Management. Now I'm leveraging my unique experience to help build the best-in-class catalog for alcohol one beer at a time.

As I work on complex policies and laws in the alcohol space, I try to speak very plainly when explaining the history and concepts that matter to Drizly so people don’t feel intimidated. I also try to participate in as many company events and Slack discussions that I can to build relationships which should translate to being more accessible overall.

I have helped out on the frontend, been on our infrastructure team, and worked extensively with our Rails API. In all of these roles I got to learn while doing high impact work.
