THREE is a growing insurance provider that sells a unique and straightforward insurance policy to small businesses – from restaurants, to electricians, to consultants – covering them against property risks (e.g. fire, theft, flood), lawsuits, and more. It was born out of and remains part of Berkshire Hathaway, one of the most respected companies in the world. At THREE, you’ll join a team of experienced insurance operators that chooses to run lean, promotes autonomy, and is charged with building a small commercial insurer that challenges the largest players in its space.

Job Responsibilities

This role is part of a small team responsible for building out THREE’s analytical foundation to help drive business strategy. Core responsibilities include:

  • Help build and refine predictive models that help to inform business decisions in marketing, rating, underwriting, and operations
  • Design, build, and maintain reports and dashboards that help key stakeholders to monitor the status of core business processes and to explore the data independently
  • Identify trends, patterns, and outliers in data and look for the underlying root causes
  • Evaluate external data sources and models for their potential efficacy in improving internal processes
  • Operationalize your work by integrating models into production workflows used across the business
  • Work closely with domain experts across the business to extract knowledge that improves model specification and supports effective validation
  • Communicate results clearly and in a way that makes intuitive sense, so others can understand them, trust them, and act on them with confidence
  • Ensure all work is reproducible, well-organized, and appropriately documented, making it easy to review and build upon
  • Deliver decision-ready outputs backed by rigorous validation, sense checks, and quality control

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in applied data science or statistical modeling; experience in insurance or actuarial domains is a strong plus
  • Strong intuition for probabilistic reasoning and the principles underlying statistical modeling
  • Proficient in Python (or R) and SQL for data manipulation and analysis
  • Experience leveraging AI tools to accelerate workflows, with a clear understanding of their limitations and the safeguards needed for quality, privacy, and security
  • Knowledgeable about Bayesian methods, hierarchical modeling, and machine learning techniques
  • Strong organizational skills, acute attention to detail, and a preference for taking a methodical approach to analysis and problem-solving
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and an eagerness to collaborate across disciplines

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
