The Company

Tutor Intelligence is building the technology and processes to let robots go where they’ve never gone before: the average American factory. We understand that general-purpose and generally-intelligent robots are going to be built in our lifetimes, and we’re combining human and artificial intelligence to lead the charge.

The Role

Tutor built, owns, and operates a fleet of robots for internal use in Watertown, MA. Our robots generate thousands of hours of robot data a week, which our research team uses to improve our state of the art foundation models for robot manipulation.

We are looking for a Data Operations Lead to ensure that these thousands of hours of data are the highest quality they can possibly be. You will work closely with our research team, train foundation robot models, and run experiments to understand and define what makes robot data high quality. You will lead our operations team of 50+, building systems of observability and feedback to ensure that they generate the highest quality data as defined by you and our research team. As the saying in AI goes, “garbage in, garbage out”. You will be responsible for ensuring there is no “garbage in”.

What You’ll Do

  • Coordinate an existing team of 50+ people to use our robots to generate high quality, relevant data for our foundation models
  • Determine what our fleet of robots should do to best maximize company objectives
  • Work with our research team to define what high quality data is, and how to achieve it
  • Train and evaluate robot models, to understand how data and models affect one another
  • Manage an operations team to achieve high uptime of the robots. Coordinate maintenance replacements and engineering assistance if needed

Requirements

  • 1-5+ years of experience in a product, engineering, research, or technical operations lead role
  • Strong leader, proven track record implementing and maximizing KPIs on cross-functional teams
  • Comfortable working with complicated software and hardware systems in physical environments
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate abstract technical concepts into concrete operational changes
  • Independent thinker and operator, who will continuously generate experiments and ideas that push forward our objectives

Nice to Haves

  • Comfort and experience building tooling software (with AI tools or otherwise)
  • Familiarity with AI models and data
  • Experience working in robotics

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary and meaningful equity
  • Fully employer-covered health and dental insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Regular in-office meals and team events
  • A collaborative, low-ego environment where people are trusted to do their best work

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
