Meet Flagship:

Flagship is building an innovative Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) software that empowers DTC retail brands to maximize growth efficiency. Our platform seamlessly integrates with their first-party data to provide tailored insights based on advanced data analytics to drive cross-functional strategic decision-making.

At Flagship, we have built a multidisciplinary team of machine learning experts and industry professionals from the tech, commerce, and retail sectors. This has allowed us to build software that actually serves the needs of retail planning teams and executives and enables data-driven collaboration across departments. Our mission is to break businesses free from the limitations of outdated, siloed metrics and instead, focus on high-impact growth indicators that contribute to a positive net business outcome.

Join us in revolutionizing the way that retailers interact with their data to make more accurate, granular decisions informed by both their business expertise and machine learning algorithms.

Meet the Role:

As a Data Engineer, you will work with the craftspeople across Flagship as you build systems that work with our customers’ data, their existing tech stacks, and the rest of the Flagship ecosystem. You’ll build pipelines for collecting, preserving, and transforming customer data for use by our Data Scientists and our web application.

  • Build with autonomy and accountability. It might bear repeating that we’re a startup, but we also have paying customers in production. You will build features of your own, and you’ll help us maintain the existing features that our customers love.

  • Discuss solutions across disciplines. We have brilliant folks at Flagship across the board, from data science to customer onboarding to sales. Planning new features for this data-heavy application means collaboration with those that understand it best.

  • Dig in with empathy. Flagship is a sophisticated application. When customers—internal and external—have issues, it’s just as often about education and transparency as it is about fixing a bug or improving a tool. Debugging here is an interdisciplinary process full of humility and curiosity.

  • Design, design, design. Flagship is a small team building a large application. We empower everyone to contribute to the design of the app and its architecture, but the execution often falls to us as Engineers. We want you to be curious, and we want you to be creative.

  • Challenge Us. As a small team, our familiarity can sometimes limit our perspective. We want you to bring fresh ideas that will help us grow as a team.

What you’ll do:
  • Read and write lots of Python. Our product contains a mountain of code in varying degrees of completeness and correctness.

  • Support the rest of our team. That might mean helping with an internal admin tool to visualize what’s in the warehouse. That might mean some clever SQL to help Data Science. That might mean helping our Customer Experience team understand the quality of a customer’s data.

  • Add features to the ETL pipelines that feed data into and out of our data warehouse. Support the web application developers as we plumb both new sources and new types of customer data.

  • Leverage SQL (and PL/pgSQL) to help us get the most out of Postgres, our primary source of truth. Design tables and indexes to preserve the performance of both the warehouse and our frontend database.

  • Build and maintain integrations with a variety of HTTP APIs, from REST to GraphQL. Ditto for ingesting large datasets from CSVs and JSONL files.

  • Contribute to the Go and/or JavaScript supporting the web application. The role involves a lot of cross-functional work with our web Engineers. The more context we can share, the better.

What you’ll want to thrive:

Like any startup, we need folks that bring specialties of their own in addition to the table stakes.

  • You have experience with Alembic and/or SQLAlchemy, used by the data warehouse.

  • You have experience with Docker, Terraform, or AWS, all of which manage our customer-facing environments.

  • We have continuous deployment in place. What have you used to deploy applications in the past?

  • You’ve worked in remote-first companies. Our team is scattered across the US, so we spend a lot of time discussing our work on Slack and Zoom.

Not necessary but nice to have:
  • Experience working with Shopify and/or ERPs: Enterprise Resource Planning tools (e.g., NetSuite, iSync, ApparelMagic, Blue Cherry). Our customers use them, and our software talks to them.

  • Experience with Snowflake, a key tool our Data Scientists use.

  • Experience working with large text files (many MBs), large datasets (millions of rows), file encodings (e.g. UTF-8), and other extremes of data engineering.

Our values:
  • We’re Curious. We obsess over uncovering what would make our customers happier and our team faster.

  • We’re Constructive. Our best work often comes from applying creative constraints and doing more with less.

  • We’re Agile. Startups are inherently messy, and agility is our antidote.

  • No Egos Allowed. We value impact over pride and believe no job is beneath us when it comes to moving the team forward.

  • We’re Outcome-Oriented. You can execute your part perfectly and still miss the mark if the overall goal isn’t met.

  • We’re Proactive. We actively seek ways to make an impact, even if it is beyond our specific job responsibilities.

  • We’re All In. Our success requires the skills and viewpoints of a diverse and dedicated team.

What we offer:
  • Accelerated hands-on learning and a commitment to professional growth as we build and grow both the software and our teams

  • An incredible amount of trust and freedom in your ability to deliver as well as the support of a software engineering team that’s invested in your success

  • An opportunity to be an important part of a fast growing software application company

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. Sponsorship for work visas is not available for this position.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
