About the Role
The Athletic is seeking a CRM Marketing Manager to own the end-to-end execution of high-impact campaigns focused on engaging, retaining, and converting our readers. This role will manage the full process from audience segmentation and campaign build to QA, deployment, and monitoring. The ideal candidate is a customer-centric, technically-minded, detail-oriented marketer who can balance manual production needs with a vision for modernizing our workflows through AI and automation.
Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end execution of programs that build relationships with our readers, develop habitual engagement, and drive subscription starts across email, push, and in-app channels.
- Implement new opportunities for automation and personalization through journey building, audience segmentation, and testing roadmaps.
- Experiment with AI-forward workflows and ESP-specific automation to make campaign builds faster, smarter, and more efficient.
- Assist in managing overall email list health and protecting domain reputation/deliverability across all email efforts.
- Drive continuous improvement of business and team channel-specific KPIs, maintaining a clear project process plan and documenting best practices.
- Communicate proactively and clearly with business leaders and stakeholders about execution, and performance tracking to plan.
- Partner with Design to audit and ensure existing emails are optimized as well as build new and innovative templates for campaigns & workflows.
- Collaborate with Analytics, Product, Marketing, Design, Data Science and Engineering on email and push execution and testing as well as new omni-channel technical integrations.
Requirements
- 3+ years experience planning, executing, and analyzing marketing automation campaigns, with a strong focus on email marketing.
- A self-starting, “execution-first” attitude with the confidence to make data-driven recommendations and a desire to own the operational process.
- Ability to build and manage complex audience segmentation, eligibility rules and suppressions logic to ensure consistent and reliable targeting.
- Proven experience in an email/CRM management function.
- Hands-on experience with enterprise-level CRM platforms (e.g., Iterable, Braze, Sailthru, etc.) and a working knowledge of HTML.
- Superior project management and communication skills with the ability to balance rigorous attention to detail with swift execution across a variety of initiatives.
- Strong analytical skills; able to create impactful marketing campaigns.
- Experience with A/B testing, messaging, and post-campaign analysis.
- Interest in sports, tech, and media is preferred, but not required.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
The annual base salary range for this role is $75,000- $92,000K USD The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
