The Counsel Workplace Safety will help shape the global safety practices and legal compliance at General Motors. This role will provide legal advice and counsel to GM Manufacturing, Global Workplace Safety, Medical, and technical experts on workplace safety obligations, risk mitigation and related policies. Specifically, this role will provide legal advice and counsel to GM on:

• Admitted to practice in at least one jurisdiction in the United States and, if not admitted in Michigan, the ability to qualify for in-house counsel status in Michigan.

Location: This role is based remotely but if you live within a 50-mile radius of (Atlanta, Austin, Detroit, Warren, Milford or Mountain View), you are expected to report to that location three times a week, at minimum.
Compensation:
The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws.
The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position, as well as geography of the selected candidate.

The Counsel Workplace Safety will help shape the global safety practices and legal compliance at General Motors. This role will provide legal advice and counsel to GM Manufacturing, Global Workplace Safety, Medical, and technical experts on workplace safety obligations, risk mitigation and related policies. Specifically, this role will provide legal advice and counsel to GM on:
- Responses to OSHA safety and retaliation complaints.
- OSHA onsite inspections of GM facilities.
- Resolution and/or litigation of OSHA citations issued to GM facilities.
- Interpretation of safety related legal obligations, e.g. those enforced by federal and state OSHA agencies, and application to the business environment.
- Injury/illness reporting and record keeping obligations.
- Advice and counsel to GM Audit Services on health and safety audits.
- Various internal GM safety related communications, including bulletins and incident reports.
- Developing and maintaining global workplace safety standards and creating a global center of excellence for workplace safety.
- Supporting the GM Global Workplace Safety organization's objectives.
Qualifications & Experience
- 5-8 years of workplace safety legal experience; law firm training is preferred, and prior in-house experience in a manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge and understanding of automotive industry is a plus. Work with industries involving batteries and electric energy generation a huge plus.
- Ability to lead projects and inspire cross-functional team to high performance.
- Demonstrated commitment to compliance, integrity and quality.
- Demonstrated experience providing legal advice in a highly regulated environment.
- Demonstrated experience identifying and resolving legal issues quickly and effectively and ability to make on immediate risk-mitigation decisions.
- Demonstrated experience prioritizing conflicting demands from multiple business clients in an extremely fast paced environment.
- Ability to collaborate, build relationships, gain credibility, and partner effectively with others up and down a matrixed organization.
- Self-directed, solution-focused individual that with strong work ethic and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally to achieve enterprise-wide results.
• Ability to strategically guide the organization through change and inspire others to get involved and solve problems. - Knowledge and experience in key legal trends that impact the business.
• Ability to respectfully speak up, exchange feedback and boldly share ideas.
• Strong oral and written communicator with an aptitude for critical thinking and succinctly presenting the best course of action.
