About the Role:

We are seeking a highly capable and independent Commercial Counsel to manage and lead a wide range of complex commercial legal matters. In this pivotal role, you will autonomously draft, negotiate, and review sophisticated procurement agreements, sales contracts, partner agreements, and other strategic commercial arrangements. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain consistent availability from 8AM to 5PM Pacific Time, with occasional extended or earlier hours to address critical business requirements. This position is ideal for a proactive attorney who thrives in a dynamic environment, expertly balancing competing priorities and driving cross-functional initiatives. You will report to the Senior Manager, Commercial Counsel, and be instrumental in enhancing the legal team's strategic impact and operational excellence. This generalist role will leverage and deepen your expertise across multiple commercial legal domains, with a continued emphasis on procurement, while also taking ownership of high-visibility projects across the commercial legal portfolio.

What You'll Do:
  • Independently draft, review, and negotiate a diverse range of commercial agreements, including but not limited to procurement, sales, and strategic partnership agreements, often without direct supervision.
  • Actively identify opportunities and implement improvements to existing legal processes and workflows within your areas of expertise, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the legal department.
  • Contribute to high-visibility, cross-functional legal projects, collaborating effectively with diverse stakeholders across the organization.
  • Strategically identify and solve complex legal and business problems, applying creative solutions that advance company goals while navigating rapidly changing conditions.
  • Proactively manage your workload, prioritize effectively, and communicate clearly with stakeholders and leaders regarding plans, progress, and any necessary adjustments.
What We're Looking For:
  • 5-8 years of progressive legal experience, with at least 3-5 years gained in-house at a high-growth technology company or advising tech clients at a reputable law firm.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a strong team player and willingness to "roll up sleeves" and assist multiple internal and external stakeholders, ensuring timely and efficient project execution.
  • Proven ability to operate with significant independence, manage negotiations and projects, and exercise consistently strong legal and business judgment without constant oversight.
  • Exceptional and persuasive communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to influence stakeholders, resolve conflicts, and tailor messaging effectively across all levels of the organization, including senior management.
  • A proactive mindset with a track record of identifying, designing, and implementing process improvements that enhance legal operations and support business objectives.
  • Capacity for strategic thinking, consistently analyzing risks and rewards, and applying creative problem-solving to complex, cross-functional challenges.
  • A highly collaborative individual who actively seeks and shares inputs, fosters strong working relationships, and can work in parallel with senior managers and directors to achieve shared goals.
  • Fluency in written and spoken (Spanish is a significant plus.)

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
