Why This Role Matters:
The Group 1001 Life & Annuity business unit seeks an attorney to join the Law and Compliance Department as Corporate Counsel. This position will provide legal support for the operational business issues affecting the life insurance companies in the Life & Annuity business unit. This position will report to the Head of Litigation/ Director, Special Investigations Unit.
How You’ll Contribute:
- You will play a key role in providing timely legal and strategic advice to various operating units and leadership within the Life & Annuities business unit regarding the alignment of operational and administrative practices with legal requirements and company objectives
- In the role, you will participate in developing and implementing company policies and procedures to ensure compliance with laws and regulations and to proactively identify and mitigate potential legal risks
- You will also be engaged in overseeing and managing legal disputes, including coordinating with outside counsel, and developing strategies to avoid costly litigation
- You will be asked to conduct thorough research on complex legal issues and analyze new or changing legislation to keep the company informed and compliant
- The ideal candidate will also assume responsibility for the management of various Law and Compliance long and short-term initiatives and participate in special projects
What We’re Looking For:
- Juris Doctor degree from an American Bar Association accredited law school.
- In good standing bar licensure and able to practice law in your residence state
- 1-5 years of law firm experience in insurance defense and/or general corporate matters, or comparable in-house experience
- Strong critical thinking skills and solid academic background
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to effectively work with various departments and staff at all levels within the company
- Willingness to learn and work autonomously and within a team structure
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent legal research, writing and advocacy skills; proven ability to analyze complex legal issues and produce top quality work
- Excellent judgment, attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive and confidential information
- Ability to handle ambiguity, juggle many matters at once and quickly shift from one situation or task to another
- Ability to strike sensible and practical balance between legal risks and the need to do business and solutions oriented
- Adept at working in a fast-paced, high activity environment with smart and creative people
- Strong ability to influence, provide point of view and to listen
- Strong sense of urgency about problem solving, meeting deadlines and achieving goals
Compensation:
Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $110,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $165,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
