Job Summary

Graphcore is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our Data Center Engineering organization and drive engineering coordination efforts with external data center developers. You will be working with a multi-disciplinary team of technical leaders to deliver best-in-class infrastructure solutions. The ideal location for this position will be based out of Austin. Roughly 10-20% travel time can be expected..

The Team

The Data Center Engineering team is responsible for the design, development, and deployment of infrastructure that supports Graphcore’s advanced AI compute platforms.
The team collaborates with internal engineering groups, external consultants, and data center developers to deliver reliable and scalable environments for high-performance computing workloads.
Team members work across multiple disciplines—including mechanical, electrical, facilities, and IT infrastructure—to ensure that Graphcore’s data center deployments meet stringent performance, efficiency, and operational reliability requirements.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develop and review design standards and specifications, ensuring alignment with industry standard methodologies and Graphcore’s reliability goals.
  • Perform detailed engineering analysis of designs, ensuring efficiency and reliability of operation.
  • Provide direction, coordinate with, and review the designs of external consultants and partners.
  • Ensure delivery of future-proof engineered solutions.
  • Conduct site inspections and attend factory visits critical infrastructure and equipment.
  • Define and issue owner’s requirements for mechanical systems design.
  • Manage design teams from an owner’s perspective and make decisions to keep projects moving forward.
  • Stay informed on the latest industry developments and emergent technologies within the data center industry.

Candidate Profile:

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Deep technical knowledge of HVAC equipment and systems including: chillers, boilers, pumps, air handling equipment, duct and piping design, sequence of controls.
  • Experience coordinating with IT teams for infrastructure design in support of HPC racks and data centers.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate in a cross-discipline team.
  • Comfortable with a fast-paced environment that is rapidly developing and changing.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent international certification (this position will not be stamping drawings as EOR).

Desirable:

  • Prior experience with hyperscale data center environments or co-location facilities at the Tier III or Tier IV levels as defined by Uptime Institute.
  • Experience with plumbing systems equipment and design (domestic water, waste/vent, etc.)
  • Visio, BlueBeam, AutoCAD, Revit, or other design and drafting software.
