Description
Engrain builds map-based technology that is redefining how real estate works. Our interactive, unit-level maps and powerful data integrations help over 1,000 companies-and 20,000 properties-to make smarter decisions, streamline leasing, and deliver better renter experiences. From prospect to renewal, our products give properties a spatial brain and a visual edge when it comes to property marketing and management. And it's working: our churn rate is just 5%, and we've been putting up double-digit growth numbers every year.
We're not your typical proptech company. We move fast, we stay curious, and we don't do stale or corporate fluff. Backed by successful Seed and Series A rounds-with a fresh raise on the horizon-we're entering a phase of serious scale.
As Controller, you will have the opportunity to be a part of Engrain's growth and dynamic environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for budget management, financial analysis, payroll, forecasting, accounts payable, accounts receivable and financial reporting. This is a fantastic opportunity for a professional who thrives in an entrepreneurial environment and is well-versed in working closely with management. In this role you'll work not only on traditional accounting tasks but also play a critical role in speaking into the processes and workflows to lay the groundwork for scaling an efficient and effective accounting/finance function as the organization grows. This role supervises a small but mighty team and reports to the VP of Finance & Accounting.
What You'll Do...
  • Financial Operations Management:
    • Lead and oversee all daily accounting operations, including treasury management, billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processing.
    • Ensure accurate and timely general ledger management, including comprehensive account reconciliations and journal entries.
    • Manage tax compliance activities, coordinating with external tax advisors for timely filings and adherence to relevant tax codes.
    • Drive revenue recognition processes in accordance with ASC 606 standards, ensuring proper accounting for SaaS subscriptions and other revenue streams.
  • Month-End Close & Reporting Excellence:
    • Orchestrate and drive the entire month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, striving for continuous improvement in speed, accuracy, and efficiency.
    • Prepare and compile comprehensive financial reporting packages, including balance sheets, income statements, and statements of cash flow, for internal management, the Board, and external stakeholders.
    • Conduct in-depth financial analysis of actual results versus budget/forecast, providing clear, concise explanations of variances and performance drivers to senior leadership.
  • Team Leadership & Development:
    • Directly manage, mentor, and develop a small but mighty team of 5 accounting and finance professionals, fostering a collaborative, high-performance, and growth-oriented environment.
    • Conduct regular performance reviews, provide constructive feedback, and support the professional growth and career development of team members.
    • Delegate tasks effectively, set clear expectations, and ensure team accountability for deliverables.
  • Financial Performance Monitoring & Analysis:
    • Continuously monitor the financial performance and cash flow of the company, providing timely and actionable insights to enable optimal business decisions.
    • Develop and analyze key financial and operational metrics, ensuring leadership is well-informed on the company's financial health and trajectory.
  • Financial Controls & Compliance:
    • Develop, implement, and rigorously manage robust internal financial controls in accordance with US GAAP and regulatory requirements, safeguarding company assets and ensuring data integrity.
    • Ensure strict adherence to company financial policies and procedures across all accounting functions.
  • Systems, Processes & Best Practices:
    • Champion and implement best practices in accounting systems, processes, and procedures, with a strong focus on enhancing data accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness as the company scales.
    • Identify opportunities for automation and process improvements, leveraging existing tools (NetSuite, Salesforce) and exploring new technologies (Workato).
  • Cross-Functional Business Partnering:
    • Act as a proactive business partner to all functional departments (Sales, Product, Marketing, Engineering, Operations), providing expert accounting-related guidance and support as the company continues its rapid growth.
    • Facilitate seamless communication and collaboration between accounting and other teams to optimize cross-functional workflows.
  • External Relationships & Audit Management:
    • Serve as the primary contact and effectively manage relationships with external financial partners, including auditors, tax advisors, and banking institutions.
    • Oversee and coordinate all aspects of the annual audit process, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of requested information and successful completion.
  • Strategic Planning & Support:
    • Actively participate in the development and support of the company's strategic plans, providing financial insights and analysis to guide decision-making and long-term objectives.
