Position Summary:

The Contract and Subcontracts Manager will own the full contract lifecycle for a rapidly growing aerospace and defense technology startup. This role demands a seasoned professional who can navigate high-stakes government and commercial agreements, balance compliance with speed, and protect the company’s interests in a fast-moving environment. You’ll work directly with executives, program managers, engineers, and customers to structure, negotiate, and manage agreements that are critical to the company’s mission success. You’ll be the primary contracts authority, reporting directly to senior leadership and shaping the company’s contracting posture. Expect to move quickly, think creatively within the rules, and have a direct impact on revenue and program success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Draft, review, and interpret contract terms, ensuring clarity, enforceability, and alignment with corporate objectives.

  • Lead contract negotiations for complex U.S. Government, commercial, and international agreements, balancing regulatory compliance with business agility.

  • Ensure compliance with FAR, DFARS, ITAR, export control laws, and other applicable regulations.

  • Participates as a key member of the proposal or program team to address contract requirements and advise leadership on contractual risk, obligations, and strategic positioning in bids, proposals, and program execution

  • Partner closely with Business Development and Program Management teams to review Requests for Proposals to align contract terms with technical scope, delivery schedules, and funding profiles.

  • Negotiates terms and conditions (including estimated cost or price, delivery, quality, and performance requirements) for contracts or subcontracts within business goals, and documents discussions, agreements, and results.

  • Reviews contract documents for accuracy, performance risk, and conformance with contract terms, conditions, and other provisions, including applicable federal regulations and business team objectives prior to signature/acceptance

  • Manages contract change process and works with the Program Manager, Engineering, Finance, and other disciplines to mitigate performance risk

  • Responds to internal and external inquiries regarding contract issues, audits, and compliance requirements

  • Develop and maintain lean, scalable contract processes, templates, and playbooks for a startup environment.

  • Maintain accurate, organized, and audit-ready contract records in a secure environment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Law, Contract Management, or related discipline (Master’s preferred).

  • 8–10+ years of progressive contract management experience, with at least 5 years in aerospace/defense.

  • Demonstrated success in negotiating and managing FAR/DFARS-based contracts and subcontracts.

  • Strong understanding of U.S. Government acquisition processes and contracting experience with prime contractors or subcontractor across all contract types (FFP, CPFF, T&M, IDIQ, OTA).

  • Exercises substantial independent judgment in methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria with an ability to make decisions and obtain results under tight timelines.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills—able to work with engineers, executives, and contracting officers alike.

  • Possesses substantial computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office) to support effective communications and business needs

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-growth startup environment with shifting priorities.

  • Qualified candidate must have the ability to obtain a security clearance. This requires U.S. Citizenship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active U.S. security clearance (Secret or higher).

  • NCMA CPCM, CFCM, CCCM, or DAWIA Level III certification.

  • Experience with SBIR/STTR and OTA agreements.

  • International contracting and export compliance experience.
