About the Role

As a Contract Software Engineer for Internal Tools at Mach9, you will play a critical role in building and maintaining the systems that power our machine learning workflows and operational efficiency. You will take ownership of several high-impact internal products—from annotation and dataset tracking systems, to software that help us triage customer data issues, to visualization tools that help our ML team debug models.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-moving, collaborative environment and enjoys building reliable software that brings efficiency to the whole team. You’ll work closely with perception engineers, ML researchers, and annotation teams, turning requirements into polished internal applications.

This is a remote, hourly-based contractor position, with preference for overlapping working hours with the San Francisco time zone (PST).

Example Past and Future Projects
  • Build and maintain our in-house annotation tracking system, enabling efficient labeling workflows and dataset versioning.

  • Develop dashboards to visualize model metrics, compare between models to inform training and development decisions.

  • Develop software that helps us validate and triage issues with customer uploaded datasets.

What We’re Looking For
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, with experience building high quality tools in Python, TypeScript, or similar languages.

  • Proficiency in modern web frameworks (e.g., React, Next.js, Flask) and comfort designing clean UI/UX for internal applications.

  • Experience working with Postgres, including schema design, indexing, migrations, and secure access patterns.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently, break down ambiguous requests, and deliver well-scoped solutions.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.

  • Previous experience with internal tool development, developer productivity tools, or ML infrastructure is a strong plus.

  • Experience with Vercel and AWS would be a plus.

  • Experience with GIS would be a plus.

Why Mach9?

At Mach9, you’ll have the chance to design and build internal tools that directly influence the speed, quality, and reliability of our machine learning development efforts. You’ll collaborate with industry experts across perception, mapping, and 3D data, while owning systems that make our teams significantly more productive. This contractor role allows flexibility, autonomy, and the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge geospatial technology in a highly impactful way.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
