SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:
Northern Bank’s Community Banking business model is built on partnership, and it’s the role of the Community BDO to embody Northern’s ideal of partnership within the community. In this context, business development is not about simply selling bank products and services, but, instead, working within the business community to understand a business’ challenges and to help identify solutions.
This role focuses primarily on new client acquisition within an assigned geographical footprint/market. While the role will partner with local branches, a successful BDO thrives on their own ability to identify opportunities and make the appropriate connections. The BDO must have and/or establish strong relationships with advisors, community organizations, centers of influence and other connections that can aid in the assistance needed to help small businesses thrive and prosper.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Cultivate business banking opportunities for both deposit and loan relationships within a defined geographic area.
  • Work with internal and external business partners to develop and deliver solutions to prospects

  • Identify key community partners (COIs, organizations) and actively manage these relationships to maintain visibility and drive an impact in the community
  • Serve as a partner for clients and prospects, helping to identify and understand their challenges and how resources, brank products and solutions can help them thrive
  • Conduct preliminary underwriting and structure of credit requests
  • Manage a portfolio of business clients to help minimize risk for the bank, cross sell to the book of business and create a positive customer experience
  • Maintain internal contact management system including full relationship contact history throughout the business development lifecycle.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent related experience, required.
  • Strong sales skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and creatively to find solutions to customer’s problems.
  • Basic knowledge of credit and understanding of commercial business and banking.
  • Deeply rooted, locally engaged with active ties to the community and key partners.
  • History of volunteerism

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
