Our Coding Advisor will be responsible for reviewing patient charts coded by Medical Coding Team Members for accuracy and completeness, through review of the patient chart and the applied accompanying codes (ICD-10, CPT, and Internal Tracker Codes) as necessary. This person will review coded charts to ensure proper medical codes are applied; communicates any deficiencies to both the team members and leadership and recommends remedial training as necessary.

Here is what you can expect as our Coing Advisor:

  • Responsible for reviewing patient charts coded by Coding Associates for accuracy and completeness through review of the patient chart and the applied accompanying codes (ICD-10, CPT, and Internal Tracker Codes) as necessary.

  • Review coded charts to ensure proper medical codes are applied, and communicate any deficiencies to both the associates and leadership. Recommends remedial training, as necessary.

  • Performs reviews of account escalations/second-level reviews or other special project reviews utilizing the medical charts and previously applied codes and compares both to ensure accuracy, while making written notes of findings and communicating those findings with team members and leadership.

  • Performs client and coder-focused audits or chart reviews as needed.

  • May be required to notify team members directly and individually via e-mail or telephone of instances where serious deficiencies necessitate focused reviews.

  • Discusses with the Coding QA Management and Coding Management issues/questions/problems which may arise.

  • Understand billing and coding requirements for government and commercial payers 

  • Abstract statistical data from the patient record and enter information following client/customer guidelines 

  • Utilize coding resources or applicable reference materials to ensure accuracy in coding for assigned services 

  • Follow all HIPAA regulations and uphold a higher standard around privacy requirements. 

  • Maintain productivity standards, tracking logs and deadlines   

  • Ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and standards 

  • R1 RCM quality auditors perform audits to ensure that medical coding and billing practices adhere to industry standards and regulations. 

Required qualifications:

  • CPC, CPMA, RHIA, RHIT, CCS-P, and/or CCS certification

  • Minimum 1 year of physician coding and auditing experience, multi-specialty experience preferred 

  • Surgical Coding Experience preferred

  • Experience in Smartsheet

  • Intermediate skill level in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook

  • Knowledge of auditing and/or coding with CPT/HCPCS/ICD10/PCS 

For this US-based position, the base pay range is $18.16 - $31.13 per hour . Individual pay is determined by role, level, location, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
