Job Description:

GDIT is looking for a Senior Cloud Solutions Engineer to join our National Institutes of Health (NIH) CIT Hosting and Storage Services Program.

We are seeking an experienced and customer-focused cloud engineer to design and deliver secure, reliable, and scalable solutions for customers whose requirements extend beyond our standard cloud infrastructure and platform offerings. Our ideal candidate combines broad AWS and Azure expertise with an understanding of application architecture, infrastructure, security, networking, identity, automation, and modern DevOps practices.

As a member of our Cloud DevOps team, this engineer will work directly with customers to understand business, application, data, and scientific requirements and translate them into well-designed cloud solutions. They will take ownership of solutions from discovery and architecture through engineering and delivery, leveraging standard platform capabilities where appropriate while developing custom Infrastructure as Code, automation, and integrations where needed. The successful candidate will bring strong technical judgment, consider the downstream impacts and tradeoffs of design decisions, and operate as a trusted technical consultant to customers throughout their cloud journey.

Location: Remote working candidates will be considered; however the preference is for candidates to go onsite to Bethesda, MD 3 days out of the week. If you're within 60 miles of customer site, we would look for you to go onsite, as needed.

This role will require you to obtain and maintain a Public Trust and will require you to provide onsite fingerprinting at a designated facility.  This investigation may review personal and criminal behavior, financial conduct, foreign influence, as well as other adjudications.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner directly with customers to discover and document business, application, data, security, and technical requirements and translate them into cloud architectures and actionable engineering plans.

  • Design and implement custom solutions in AWS and Azure for application and data hosting, including scientific and research platforms such as REDCap, Posit, and other specialized workloads that do not align with standard IaaS or PaaS offerings.

  • Engineer end-to-end cloud solutions incorporating compute, storage, databases, networking, identity and access management, security, monitoring, backup/recovery, application architecture, and other required cloud services.

  • Develop and maintain Terraform modules, configuration, scripts, and automation required to provision and manage custom solutions, leveraging standard reusable services and patterns wherever practical.

  • Design and integrate DevOps and CI/CD capabilities that support application deployment, infrastructure delivery, security scanning, testing, monitoring, and ongoing lifecycle management.

  • Apply sound engineering judgment and second-order thinking to evaluate technical alternatives, dependencies, security risks, operational impacts, scalability, maintainability, and long-term consequences when recommending solutions.

  • Independently drive assigned solutions through delivery while collaborating within an Agile Cloud DevOps team, participating in sprint planning, technical design and code reviews, and coordinating with security, infrastructure, application, and other engineering teams as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 8+ years of relevant IT experience, or equivalent experience.

  • Strong hands-on AWS and Azure experience across compute, storage, databases, networking, identity, security, monitoring, and related cloud services.

  • Experience designing and implementing cloud solutions for applications and data, with knowledge of application architectures, availability, scalability, resiliency, security, and lifecycle requirements.

  • Strong Infrastructure as Code experience using Terraform, including developing custom modules, leveraging reusable modules, and working within shared Git-based code repositories.

  • Experience with cloud networking, identity and access management, security, and DevOps/CI/CD practices, including automated infrastructure and application deployment, testing, security scanning, and monitoring.

  • Experience independently owning technical solutions from requirements gathering and architecture through implementation, troubleshooting, documentation, and transition to operations.

  • Strong consulting, communication, and analytical skills, with experience engaging customers, translating requirements into technical architectures, evaluating tradeoffs and downstream impacts, and delivering solutions within an Agile sprint-based environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience architecting and supporting scientific, research, healthcare, or data-intensive applications in the cloud, including platforms such as REDCap, Posit, or comparable research technologies.

  • Experience with containerized and cloud-native architectures, managed cloud services, application modernization, cloud migrations, and automation using Terraform, Ansible, Python, PowerShell, or similar technologies.

  • Relevant AWS, Microsoft Azure, Terraform, DevOps, or architecture certifications and experience supporting federal government, healthcare, life sciences, or similarly regulated environments.
