Role Overview

We are seeking a highly analytical and technically skilled Catastrophe Risk Modeler to join our team. The ideal will have a strong background in statistical and predictive modeling, who thrives on solving complex problems, particularly related to modeling insurance exposure to natural catastrophe risk. In this role you will work with large datasets to expand and improve our predictive models and analytical toolsets. As part of our team, you'll contribute to diverse projects, from crafting innovative solutions to resolving client queries. This will be a remote position.  

Responsibilities

  • Develop, calibrate, and maintain catastrophe models for perils such as wildfire, flood, wind, earthquake, and other natural hazards.
  • Collect, analyze, and process large data sets from clients as well as national and international sources.
  • Design and implement data pipelines to process large geospatial and temporal datasets from multiple sources. Build complex statistical models using geospatial statistical methods, machine learning, and other modeling techniques.
  • Collaboratively write code to manipulate and analyze large and complex numeric and geospatial data sets.
  • Rigorously evaluate the built models for their performance and validate them with respect to historical data.
  • Write clear documentation of implemented methodologies, justifying critical steps and assumptions.  
  • Present model results and data analysis findings to team members and clients with diverse scientific and statistical backgrounds.
  • Utilize the KatRisk Software Suite and interpret results for clients and internal studies.
  • Contribute to ongoing research and development in hazard science, vulnerability modeling, and climate-related risk assessment.

Requirements

Required

  • Master’s with or Ph.D. in a STEM field. 
  • 2+ years of experience in catastrophe modeling, actuarial science, or quantitative risk analytics.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.  
  •  Strong proficiency in R or Python, 
  • Knowledge of LINUX user environment and command-line operation
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), e.g., QGIS, GRASS, GDAL. Ability to programmatically manipulate geospatial data is highly desirable.
  • Experience in collecting, manipulating, and processing large data sets. 
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Excellent collaboration skills in a remote work environment.
Preferred
  • Strong understanding of catastrophe modeling concepts (hazard, exposure, vulnerability, loss).
  • Peer-reviewed publications that highlight critical thinking and statistical modeling skills.  
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision. 
  • Understanding of insurance industry and knowledge of terminology.
