About the Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Systems Engineer - C/C++ Full Stack Developer to lead a strategic modernization initiative for a mission-critical Store Management System that has evolved over more than 30 years.
The program's primary objective is the transformation of a proprietary EZC file-based database platform into a modern PostgreSQL relational database architecture. The legacy environment supports a large ecosystem of interconnected applications, system programs, libraries, batch processes, utilities, and business services that have accumulated decades of business logic, customizations, ad hoc enhancements, and non-standard implementations.
This role requires a hands-on engineering leader capable of analyzing complex legacy systems, reverse engineering undocumented functionality, designing modern architectures, and driving technical transformation while ensuring operational stability and business continuity.
Key Responsibilities
Legacy System Modernization
- Lead the modernization of a 30+ year-old Store Management System platform.
- Analyze and reverse engineer proprietary EZC file structures and data access patterns.
- Develop migration strategies from EZC to PostgreSQL with minimal business disruption.
- Identify and remediate technical debt, legacy dependencies, and non-standard implementations.
- Design transition architectures supporting phased migration and coexistence of legacy and modern platforms.
Software Engineering
- Design, develop, and maintain enterprise-grade solutions using C and C++.
- Refactor and modernize large legacy codebases while preserving critical business functionality.
- Develop APIs, middleware, integration services, and modernization frameworks.
- Troubleshoot complex applications, database, and infrastructure issues.
- Drive code quality, performance optimization, maintainability, and scalability initiatives.
Database Architecture & Migration
- Design and implement PostgreSQL database schemas, indexing strategies, and performance optimization solutions.
- Convert proprietary file-based data models into efficient relational database designs.
- Develop ETL, conversion, reconciliation, and validation processes.
- Ensure data integrity, auditability, and migration accuracy.
- Optimize high-volume transactional and batch-processing workloads.
Enterprise Systems Integration
- Analyze dependencies across applications, libraries, services, utilities, interfaces, and batch jobs.
- Collaborate with architects, business analysts, infrastructure teams, and application owners.
- Develop integration solutions that support both legacy and modern environments.
- Produce technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and migration plans.
AI-Assisted Development
- Leverage AI-powered engineering tools to accelerate software delivery.
- Utilize AI tools for legacy code analysis, reverse engineering, dependency discovery, automated documentation, test generation, and modernization activities.
- Validate, optimize, and production-harden AI-generated code and architectural recommendations.
- Establish best practices and governance for responsible AI-assisted software development within enterprise environments.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
- 10+ years of software engineering experience.
- 8+ years of hands-on C/C++ development experience.
- Extensive experience working with large-scale legacy systems and mission-critical enterprise applications.
- Strong experience with relational database design.
- Proven experience with database modernization and migration projects.
- Deep understanding of software architecture, systems programming, and integration patterns.
- Experience troubleshooting highly complex, distributed application environments.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated experience applying AI-assisted development tools within enterprise software engineering environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with proprietary, hierarchical, or file-based database platforms.
- Experience in retail, store management, point-of-sale (POS), inventory management, merchandising, or supply chain systems.
- Experience with high-volume transaction processing systems.
- Experience modernizing legacy C/C++ platforms into service-oriented or API-driven architectures.
- Familiarity with cloud technologies and modernization practices.
- Experience leading technical teams and mentoring engineers.
- Knowledge of DevOps, CI/CD, automated testing, and application observability.
