About This Role: 

Biogen is seeking a seasoned BD Counsel to become a vital contributor to our dynamic legal team. Reporting directly to the Chief Corporation Counsel, this position is based at our headquarters in Cambridge, MA. The individual stepping into this role will be at the forefront of complex deal work, pivotal to the company's strategic expansions and product pipeline development. As a BD Counsel, you will provide expert legal guidance on transaction initiatives and strategies, specializing in various forms of agreements and partnerships within the biotechnology sector. Your contributions will support Biogen's robust growth trajectory and commitment to innovation. In this role, you will be instrumental in structuring and executing strategic transactions, ensuring alignment with Biogen's business goals and legal framework. Your expertise will help shape the future of our business development endeavors, reflecting the value you bring to the broader organizational structure.

What You’ll Do:

This role would primarily support our New Ventures team that will focus on 

  • Building deep networks with the venture capital and biotech community across global ecosystems (including Europe and China) to identify emerging area of innovation. 
  • Proposing external investments aligned with Biogen’s emerging areas of strategic interest. 
  • Building and operationalizing an external pipeline independent of Biogen’s infrastructure that is aligned with Biogen’s Research and Development principles and standards.

Who You Are:

You are a strategic thinker with an impressive track record in life sciences transactions, possessing the intellectual prowess and business acumen necessary to navigate complex legal landscapes. Your decisiveness and intuition for making sound judgments are matched by your ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels. You have established a reputation for your gravitas in business counseling and your capability to manage risk through robust business practices. Your commitment to your profession is evident in your continuous pursuit of excellence and your proactive approach to collaboration and leadership within a legal context.

Required Skills:

  • Minimum of 15+ years’ experience in the corporate department of a leading law firm and/or corporate/financing entity legal department.
  • Demonstrated experience with a range of investment and transaction models in the life science space including strategic equity investments, direct venture capital investments (including as a limited partner), early-stage licensing transactions, collaborations, consortiums, university partnerships, build to buy arrangements (including option transactions) and acquisitions. 
  • Exceptional intellectual capacity and business counseling presence.
  • Strong decision-making intuition and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to establish and manage business practices for legal and risk management.
  • Local candidates only.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong background in, and familiarity with, biotechnology/pharmaceutical research and development and the early-stage life science ecosystem. 

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree with active bar licensure.

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is: $255,000.00-$351,000.00


Base salary offered is determined through an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.

Regular employees are eligible to receive both short term and long-term incentives, including cash bonus and equity incentive opportunities, designed to reward recent achievements and recognize your future potential based on individual, business unit and company performance.
