Join Fish’s team in our fast-paced Accounting Department as a Billing Supervisor. This role is part of The Hub, Fish’s remote-first group of professionals. Hub employees work primarily from home with no expectation of a regular in-office presence.

How Will You Make a Difference?

  • Oversee team in its day-to-day activities while adhering to the firm’s policies and procedures.
  • Train employees on policies and procedures that relate to all forms of billing and ensure the team’s adherence to such policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the accurate generation, timely submission and acceptance of client invoices for both routine and complex billing arrangements.
  • Oversee the timely research and resolution of all invoice rejections.
  • Review new contracts and ensure the proper incorporation into the billing systems.
  • Oversee quality control functions for the department related to billing.
  • Provide leadership to the team regarding the resolution of issues with internal and external clients.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with billing attorneys, assistants, and the Billing Rates department to coordinate new contract setup and proper billing.
  • Lead process improvement efforts through the continuous evaluation of the firm’s billing process controls, policies, and procedures and make recommendations for changes as needed to ensure the efficient functioning of the department.
  • Oversee team reporting to ensure accuracy of billing activities and provide updates to firm clients, attorneys, and department leadership.
  • Assist with the billing responsibilities related to month-end and year-end closings.
  • Identify staff developmental needs and provide technical guidance and training.
  • Support process improvement efforts and development, streamline processes designed to strengthen the firm’s billing and collection processes.
  • Monitor the timeliness and quality of responses provided to internal and external clients.
  • Work closely with all Accounting & Finance groups and department leadership.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of client information.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor and perform all responsibilities with a commitment to providing superior service to the firm’s attorneys, management, and employees; efficient and effective departmental operations; and an atmosphere of teamwork and continuous improvement.
  • Act as an effective coach to team members in meeting business goals and inspiring their continuing development through hands-on training, coaching, and performance evaluations.
  • Carry out managerial responsibilities in accordance with the firm’s policies and procedures. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Involve team members in collaborative or team-empowered decisions, as appliable.
  • Ensure team members have appropriate training and other resources to perform their roles.

What Will You Bring to the Table?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or closely related field, or equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • 5+ years’ progressive billing work experience to gain the expertise needed, preferably in a professional services or law firm industry.
  • At least 3 years’ experience supervising staff with a proven ability to lead people to achieve results.
  • Strong technical orientation including proficiency with Microsoft Office Excel, Word, and Outlook. Advanced working knowledge of time and billing software, preferably Aderant and BillBlast, as well as the willingness to learn and adapt to evolving technologies as appropriate. Ability to use technology to streamline the firm’s billing processes and complete analyses and reports.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to adjust to multiple shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Professional demeanor, exacting attention to detail, high quality work standards, and the ability to prioritize and perform effectively under pressure.
  • Superior interpersonal skills to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, in a professional manner when dealing with all levels of legal, management, and operations staff.
  • Proven ability to lead, develop, and contribute to quality team relationships, and foster a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to think strategically, identify and analyze complex issues and problems, and recommend and implement effective solutions.
  • Ability to oversee team members in various positions and geographic locations.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including critical thinking, risk-taking and creativity.
  • Possess the managerial skills necessary to interact and communicate with team members, provide instruction and direction, determine work priorities, and coordinate the activities of a team.
  • Ability to delegate and manage resources effectively.
  • Ability to change and adapt to current and future responsibilities and circumstances.
  • Occasional travel for training and collaboration is required in this position.

  • The estimated starting pay range is $78,000-$117,000 per year. Final compensation will be based on a variety of factors, including education, experience, skills, professional background, and overall qualifications. The salary range for this position is consistent across all geographic markets.
