The Flex is reimagining the global rental market. We believe renting a home should be as simple as buying something online. Our mission is to give tenants the freedom to rent anywhere in the world, while empowering landlords with powerful, easy-to-use tools that eliminate complexity and high fees.

We’re building a team of ambitious A-Players ready to scale The Flex into a worldwide leader in flexible living. If you thrive in fast-paced environments and want to engineer the core systems that power modern rentals, this role is for you.

Position Summary

As a Backend Engineer, you’ll play a critical role in building the infrastructure that powers reservations, payments, guest communications, and property operations. You will focus on designing scalable systems, API integrations, and automation tools that ensure our platform runs smoothly and efficiently at a global scale.

Key Responsibilities
  • API Development: Design and optimize APIs to integrate with booking platforms, payment gateways, and third-party services.

  • Workflow Automation: Build backend tools to streamline check-ins, check-outs, notifications, and reporting.

  • System Architecture: Develop scalable, serverless systems that support global rental operations.

  • Data & Reliability: Ensure data accuracy, system resilience, and efficient database management.

  • Debugging & Problem Solving: Investigate and resolve issues across backend services and integrations.

  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Work with product and operations to ensure backend solutions solve real-world challenges.

  • Code Quality: Maintain high standards through testing, code reviews, and CI/CD pipelines.

What We’re Looking For
  • Strong proficiency in Node.js and experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred).

  • Experience with serverless architecture and backend scalability.

  • Strong understanding of API design and system integrations.

  • Familiarity with FastAPI, Python, or scripting (bonus).

  • Background in automation systems (real estate, rentals, or travel is a plus).

  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and proactive mindset.

Why Join The Flex?
  • Build core backend systems for a high-growth global platform.

  • Work in an environment that rewards ambition and innovation.

  • Competitive pay with performance-based incentives.

  • Accelerated professional growth in a hands-on, entrepreneurial team.

You Should not apply if:

  • You are looking for a corporate 9 to 5 job

  • You are political and enjoy gossiping and talking about people behind their backs.

  • You are looking for a stable and slow dead-end job

  • You do not aim to be one of the best in the world at what you do

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
